I am having problems with boat yard in Turkey over a volvo seal the shaft is 30mm as originally fitted but the stern tube appears to be 44mm not arround 48mm as needed for the volvo seal which was replace 6 years ago for what I believe was an original volvo seal. In the past it appears that someone (maybe even the factory?) has used self amalgamating tape to make up the difference. See photo My question is has anyone seen this before as the yard are refusing to finish the job on grounds of saftey insisting that we have a very expensive job done to in increase the diameter of the tube with glass and polyester resin. Whilst not ideal there has been no leak or problems in the past, I know there are other seals available that would fit but this may be more expensive as there is no water feed. The only explanation that I can think of is that Jeanneau used the smaller tube intending initially to fit a 25 mm shaft for which there is a compatable volvo seal . Attachment Deleted

This is a common problem. On my 43 the stern tube was smaller than volvo would like. The factory had fitted a piece of rubber over the stern tube to bring it up to size. A bit of a shock when I changed the stern gland while we were still afloat but no harm done.
The best solution I have found is to buy a bike inner tube cut a bit off and put that on the stern tube then fit the volvo seal, mine is now 9 years old and has shown no signs of a problem. The other alternative is to glass some more mat onto the outside of the tube and increase the diameter. Don't just wrap it round, cut pieces that are exactly the circumference so you maintain concentrifercy (how ever you spell it?) with no bumps in it. The good news is that the tolerances on the volvo seal are pretty large so its hard to make a bad job of it.
But as I say I used pieces of innertube while the boat was afloat so its not a show stopper.
