My 2000 SO40 has used up approximately a liter/quart of lubricating oil this season, over 110 hours of engine use. The total hours are now 860, since delivery. Engine exhaust gas is clear and there are no "power" issues.
Should I be concerned about this consumption rate?
There was a very brief period of warm engine (but no alarms) during one of our cruises, when the coolant was a tad low and the engine compartment flushing fan activated.. The coolant level was replenished and the fan was idle the remainder of the season.

At 50 mph, that would be equal to 1qt per 5000 miles of driving. Frankly, I would not worry about! I use that in my 05 dmax with 140K miles and almost 5000 hours on it. I do not worry about it! I would not on my boat engine either.
My feeling is, better to use some, than not at all, or gaining! Then you know you are mixing diesel in the oil sump!

That is pretty good consumption - remember that there is cause for concertn if the engine uses too little or too much oil.

I have the same engine in a 2001 sun odyessy 43DS that has 1900 hours on it, my engine used a similar amount of oil in 500 hours, your consumption seems a little excessive to me, I suggest con tacting Yanmar to see if they have an acceptable level of consumption. A factor in oil consumption is the grade of oil used and the frequency of oil changes, the older it is the more it will use.

In prior seasons with our SO34.2, we logged between 40 and 60 hours of engine use. This year's total with the SO40 was far higher due to more cruising and uncooperative winds. In retrospect, it might have been a good idea to change the oil at mid-season. There's every reason to think that next season's hours will be back down to the "prior normal".
I don't know what oil was put in the engine at the end of last season by the prior owner, so I don't know the grade. The oil that I changed to recently meets the published Yanmar requirements. And I'm using a Yanmar filter.
Will watch this closely next season.

Karl,
Reality with oil, as long as you are using the most recent deisel oil CJ IIRC, you will meet most if not all manufactures needs. CI would be an older standard. I've not seen any CK, but I could be wrong. If you find a CK and a CJ on the shelf, get the CK!
Chevron Delo, and Shell Rotella, both get good marks from end users. I've been using Delo for 20 some odd years with no issues that I can tell. I've used Rotella a few times, as that is what the Previous owner of my boat used and gave me some. I did not believe the forum info I had read, but it is true why some call it Rosmella or some such name. It has a funky odor/smell. Some have said it is higher in sulfur......does not smell like sulfur to me...
Change out the oil every fall before you put the boat on the hard, and you should be fine, whether you do 40-60 or 100 like you did!
