Hi folks , I need your help. I am about to view 3 offered Jeanneau 40 DS . Can you clearly explain to me where on board can I find the boat's plate that show both year of production/model and ID/HIN numbers. Do I need to know any coversion code ? Was the bow thruster standard fiture on all of those boats ? (One of the boats have no bow thruster). I am not new here,I owed a Sun Shine 38 1989 and want to stay loyal. Please suggest. Thanks Alex

Hi Alex ,
you have an ID on the hull , stern starboardside. I can only speak for the 2 cabin version (my model) , but there is also a ID plate in the area where the propshaft and P bracket is situated. You will need to unscrew the cover/bedplate for that.
Regards Bow thruster was not a standard feature, but offered as an option.

BTW - I had a Sunshine and upgraded to the SO40DS last year.

HI CLOUDS, I may be folowing you on that track. After enjoying the superb 1989 Sun Shine 38 I am about to go on a 2004 40 Ds for my next boat. Can you be so kind and give me some of your ideas about this boat. The one is the two cabin version with the helm on the right side foreward.Yanmar 56 very lighly used ,fully loaded with extras. Shall I go or not ? Adoaring so much the sharpn performance of the Sun Shine shall I be disapointed on performance this time ? I am quiet sure about accomodation and level of boat structure . Tell me as much as you can. Will you allow privet mail connection ? I am from Israel (365 sailing days a year) Thanks Alex alex@gadotbio.com

If you want some space on deck in de cockpit that is , definitly go for the 2 cabin version. Dont let people scare you by saying that the helm on the right sidse will give you a visual disadvantage on the left side . That is only partialy true , the advantages of having a wheel out of the way far exceed the disadvantage of not having a central overlook. Also think about bad wheater , when you're in the back , you will - in spite of a sprayhood - be taking a shower , everytime !! Not so when you're in front of the cockpit , I frequently dive under the sprayhood when a slash is about to arrive. Only 2 cabins of course , but this year I made it possible to convert the table into a large bed , allowing 6 persons on board. Remember the aft bed in the 2 cabin version is huge and can sustain 3 persons (with the necessary ventilation ). Also , if I would do it again I think the make of engine would be a factor to consider , Volvo Penta is outrageous expensive for spareparts. Dont be disappointed about the performance of this boat though , when you have a short keel (like me) you will have to live with the (atleast) 60° wind you need to be able to sharply sail and still get some speed. This is not a racing model , but a fantastic and reliable cruising sailboat. No regrets for me.
Regards

Posted the polars today. Looks like 45-50 TWA is the sweet spot for upwind travel. The 40.9 and 39i seem to outperform this boat quite a bit based on their polars, but I have been pretty happy this year using it as a cruiser and not a racer...
