We have a new SO 409 and were clever enough to go with the full battened main with lazy jacks instead of in mast furling but man is it ever stiff! Basically it needs to be pulled down which is sort of a pain when we are sailing short handed. I heard about the Harken Battcar system and I was wondering if anyone had ever installed this and how it performs. I'm sure anything would be better than the small plastic toggles in the mast slot that come with the standard sail. Also, I was wondering if it can be installed with the mast in place (I suspect not). Even with the as yet untamed main we still love our SO 409!

Hi, crashley See previous thread on taming the main. Not sure if the SO409 mast is the right section. If it is, the Selden MDS system is worth examining. NornaJ

If you have a Selden mast then their roller car system is tops. The cars fit into the cavity that is already on the mast, no external track required. We have this on our 42I and it works great.

Thanks for the info. I don't think we have a Selden mast but I'll look into that approach. It sounds like it would be a lot easier using the Selden system if we can avoid taking the mast down.

We fitted a Frederiksen track and RCB system to our mast before it was stepped and it is a joy to use. Let the halyard go and stand clear as it drops into the stack in seconds! A Dyneema halyard is a must to cope with the extra weight of the fully battened main and associated hardware. Admiral
