Several have inquired about tankage for extended cruising or offshore sailing. On my newly arrived 50 DS, I converted the aft water tank (63 gal) to a second fuel tank for a total of 126 fuel gal. To make up for the loss of water, I added a 45 gal water Ronco tank (installed under the cockpit floor) for a total 145 gal (100 + 45). On the 50 DS, this is a relatively simple improvement. I also opted for the classic main for the adfditional roach and better control, providing approximately 110 additional square feet. Additional handholds are part of the next challenge.

Just wondering - the Ronco catalog says "!! DO NOT USE TANKS FOR FUEL STORAGE !!" (the exclamation points are theirs). Were you able to ascertain that the material used for the tanks will be ok for fuel storage? I considered that Ronco's statement could be made for legal rather than engineering reasons. On the other hand it could be because the plastic they use doesn't like diesel (or petrol) or because the fittings aren't suitable.

The Ronco tank is for the additional water tank. The aft water tank is the one being converted to fuel. Factory has confirmed suitability.

Ah! I missed that. Thanks for the clarification

How did you install the extra water tank under the cockpit floor? Isn't that just above the aft cabins?

On the 50 DS, the additional water tank (45 gal) goes under the cabin floor, adjacent to the settee. The fill comes from the port side teck, and the connections are stbd to the water system. You will need a new level gauge. The conversion of the aft water tank to a fuel tank (material for fuel & water are the same) requires a float gauge, same as fuel tank ordered from Jeanneau, so that it is compatible with the nav station readout. The water tank (now fuel) had a different sensor arrangement and is not suitable for feel.

When you converted the aft water to diesel fuel tanks what exactly did you do? Were the water tanks blue or black in color?

I don't recall the color and DUET is not close by. Both tanks were the same color. However, Jeanneau made a change in the construction of the two tanks in 2008 or 2009 in that they could hold water or fuel and were certified for that. Prior to the change, the water tank could not be used for fuel. To confirm, call Paul Fenn or Gilles at Jeanneau NA in Annapolis. The additional tank gives you terrific range and with the easily installed water tank, you loose virtually no capacity. You will have to have a separate level gauge for each tank wired to a separate readout (can be combined into a toggle) at the nav station. (I think I previously suggested that you could have the readout of the new fuel tank (previously water), wired to the original factory readout switch. That can't be done; requires a separate readout.

Thanks. I'm going to call Paul & Gilles, but the last time I had a conversation with Gilles, the blue tanks for water were not suitable for diesel fuel and Jeanneau did not make the change like they did with the SO50DS on the SO42DS, but it is worth checking again. I'll post what happens.

on our jeanneau ds40, 2 cabin version, they left room for a 3rd water tank in the rear berth. we had a custom made fuel tank built and installed there and added 50 gallons. we also added a watermaker by the way.
