I just purchased a SO349 with B&G instruments and no Autohelm. What would be a good option for this boat. I don't need a sophisticated system just one that can be installed easily. Thanks

The economic and fairly easy to install option would be a Raymarine wheel pilot, and in light to moderate conditions work well enough, can be integrated so to steer a plotter course if desired, I have one, and I can rebuild most of it if and when it breaks, the aesthetic isn’t great.
The more expensive and a better thing is a ram fixed to the steering quadrant, not only is it stronger, and out of sight - lives in kinder conditions, and better for heavy weather, it is also a back up for if your steering cables fall off/ break as you retain some steerage.
I have had both, and if the wallet was willing would opt for the ram arrangement, but the wheel pilot does ok, and if caught in heavy weather prefer to helm myself, all auto pilots ‘react’ to the conditions but can’t predict what the next big wave will do to the boat, I can’t always predict it either but can see the wave coming and steer accordingly .
Plenty of choice of ram style systems, brands etc, but I have no recommendation on that side of things.

The hydraulic ram is the most reliable, however, I would not mix B&G and Raymarine components, I had nothing but trouble on my previous boat with that combo. Stay with one brand to avoid network conflicts. Happy cruising.

Well I had an electric motor Raymarine on my last boat and it worked perfectly. So I really rather a strong motor type to move the steering. I just have herd that there is little room for the ram. So if anyone has a B&G ram model, I would like to know what model. It's hard to find a representative to discuss.
