Quick windlass maintenance - grease problems

Hi,

I am again taking my windlass apart and the grease I put on the bottom of the base plate got dry and hard.



I guess this is the reason for the squeaky noise when operating. Did I use the wrong grease, despite being advertised as salt water resistant? Perhaps I over grease? What are you guys doing/using to keep your windlass happy?

Edit: I cleaned all the dried grease off and the base plate looks like a crater landscape, could this be a galvanic corrosion problem? Additionally I saw that the spacer under the bottom cone is missing.
I saw loads of videos on youtube about windlass maintenance, but no baseplate looked like mine!

The holes are 1-2 mm deep.

thanks a lot. What did you do at the end? My favourite is the grit blasting and coating with hamerite.

I am still working on this, materials to do the job are on order, should do this over the next week or so

Finally received an offer for the parts to exchange the baseplate and all the necessary additional parts. It is 200 € cheaper than a new winch . So not worth it. Will try to revive my baseplate, live with it for a while. Not ideal, but hey...
