Hello-
I have had a SO419 for 5 years and sailed in the summer months (May through September) just coastal cruising around southern New England, USA. The boat is on the hard seven months of the year.
I am not having any problems with the mast but was thinking of un-stepping the mast this fall so I can review and insure everything is good a loft...
Is that a reasonable time frame?
Thanks

It seems a bit excessive on a 5-year-old boat. Have a professional rigger do a full inspection... a lot cheaper and has a lot less risk of something going wrong.

Hi Brent, I agree with you but it didn't say what year the boat was or when the mast was last stepped. Having said that, we had a Beneteau 321 and only stepped the mast once in the 20 years we had the boat. Chris

Thanks for the input...yes it is a only a 6 year old boat...I have an in-mast roller furler. I decided to unstep the mast this fall to make sure the in-mast furler is in good condition...Hopefully everything goes smooth and nothing breaks...!

That seems like an unnecessary effort and expense on such a new boat. Is there something wrong with the furler? Can you not see everything by going aloft?

I agree, it is a lot of effort and expensive...I talked to a couple of riggers and they did suggest a five year inspection cycle, which may help their income and lessen mine. A friend has a similar boat but a lot more sailing experience and he drops the mast every three years, now that's excessive... I decided to drop the mast since I know nothing about the mechanics of the in-mast roller furler so its time to learn. I probably won't drop the mast every five years but if I can learn something, inspect everything, complete some preventative maintenance tasks, and add a few bird spikes to save my canvas, etc. So, I've talked myself into having the marina drop the mast...I will be working with a rigger so I'm hoping he will allow me to assist in the process... I will keep you apprised of the project... Thanks again for the comments...
