Wonder if someone with a classic standard rigged Sun Odyssey 39i (not performance) with Selden spars might be able to check the number code engraved on the bottom part of the mast for me please? We are away from our boat until September and I am trying to get rig replacement quotes in Turkey. Many thanks in anticipation. Malcolm

Selden might be able to supply the information if you give them the hull number. My OEM is ZSpar and they routinely do this. Perhaps selden does also.

What happened to your mast?

Many thanks for the replies, greatly appreciated. Nothing wrong at all with the mast, it is just that the rigging is original, from 2008 so think it is time for a refresh, plus the Facnor furler is becoming too stiff to use, so planning to upgrade to a Furlex or similar. Thanks again Malcolm

Thanks again Malcolm I agree that the Facnor furler is garbage! I have hated it since we bought the boat. I think a new Harken furler is in the cards this winter.

Just had the rigging replaced on my 2012 SO36i (insurance company survey requirement). Total cost was $7200 AUD which seemed reasonable. I did as much prep as possible including drilling several holes so the chain plate assemble could be removed without dismantling all the woodwork inside. These will be hidden with cover plates. The main hassles the shipwrights had were getting the co-ax cable both out and back in through the compression post, I have VHF and 4G antennae on the mast. In hindsight it probably would have been easier (and cheaper) to remove the co-ax terminals and re-terminate when the mast went back. The other main hassle was getting one of the tie rods out. This had not been greased on the original assembly and had frozen in.
I hope it all goes smoothly Malcolm.

Beeing working in France long time ago. For lunch we drank wine! Why are they using ballbearings made of ferrite in a marine environment?

Thanks Sitara I will try to free the turnbuckles etc (which have never been loosened...) to avoid too many delays. Our radar is on a pole at the stern, so only have mast lighting and vhf etc cables, so touch wood will go OK. Probably will not do now until July, as we have reserves a berth at Marina Mytilini on Lesbos Island (which is Greece) but close to good value (I hope riggers) in Turkey at Izmir or maybe Marmaris. Cheers Malcolm

Your insurance company made you replace the chainplates on an 11 year old boat?? That seems excessive! Was there some visible corrosion or something? Usually insurance companies want just the standing rigging done, and even then, not after only 11 years! I think you need to get a different surveyor next time!

Got an excellent quote (I hope) from Alper at Silver Marine who are greatly recommended and have several bases in Turkey. silvermarine.com.tr
Total cost for new rigging and a new Furlex roller furler €8040.00 Inclusive of tax. Plan is to head over to Çeşme which is not far from Marina Mytilini on Lesbos where we will be based from July 2024. Fingers crossed it all works out. Thanks for all the feedback. Malcolm

Hi Zaphod, Not to replace chainplates, it was for inspection of the ball joint connectors on the chain plate which meant everything had to be disassembled. And I agree I think our insurers are over cautious.

Perfect, thank you Zaphod! We have a 2011 409 and we replaced the facnor under warranty ten years ago. It still didn't work well and replace it four weeks ago with a Harken furler and it is a game changer. Should have done this ten years ago. James

Did you have to change the jib luff tape?

We now have the MKIV Ocean Unit. We ended up changing the forestay as well, but didn't need to do anything to the sail. We still can't believe what we put up with all those years just because we didn't know any different. Good luck Malcom. James

James For complex reasons, we probably won't be able to get this all arranged until September 2024, principally as we have yet to get Serica to Marmaris where we will have the new furler and rigging replaced. Will let the board know the outcome in due course. Thanks for all the wise feedback and suggestions. Malcolm
