Does anyone know if the Rocna 33kg anchor will fit on a SO49 with factory fitted small bow sprit.?
I have a Rocna 15kg which I think is way too small and wanted to upgrade to the 33Kg but concerned that it may 1.hit the bow when it is raised and 2. hit the bow sprit. I am away from the boat until April so will have to check then unless anyone knows. I have looked on the posts regarding anchors but have not found any comments from SO49 owners ? Rocna site does not list the SO49 and a boat they have fitted this anchor to either.
Are there any SO49 owners out there that have different anchors on theri boats that they recomend?
Thanks Martin

I would dare to say that a 15 Kg anchor on a 49 is a joke not an anchor. When I changed the anchor on my SO 49 (several years ago) I first tried the Rocna but it's arch would interfere with the bow sprit. I then went with a 35 kg (? I think...) Spade anchor which reveald to be a fantastic anchor. So much that I changed the anchor on the next boat to a Spade also. Not very much of help but now at least you know what anchor surely fits on the bow of the SO49.

I agree the 15KG on a SO49 is a Joke. Did not realize when I bought the boat , just presumed previous owner would have and anchor to suit boat !!!. I am suspecting that he bought this size because it fitted on the bow roller and the latger ones did not . Thanks for the reply Ioredo. I will look onto the Spade anchor - nice to know the 35Kg spade would fit the SO 49 with bow sprit.
Any one want to buy a 15Kg Rocna anchor - boat currently in Leros Greece.

Our SO49 has a 60lb Manson plough which has held well in sand and mud. Manson is a New Zealand brand so not sure how widely available it is.

The 15 Kg Rocna might be a bit hard to store but why not keep it as a kedge / stern / emergency anchor?
Just a thought... I have no direct experience with the Manson (supreme?) but what I know for sure is that any new design anchor is a vast improvement over the older designs like CQR - Delta and the like.

We have a 2008 49i Performance with a double anchor roller. I doubt that a 33kg original Rocna will fit due to the length of the shank and possibly other issues. We recently replaced a 25Kg Rocna (original) with a 33kg Rocna Vulcan. With the 25Kg original Rocna, the anchor shackle would occasionally grind against the anchor locker hatch, causing damage to the fiberglass, unless you were very careful to fit it in just so. If this were the only issue, a small amount of modification to the hatch would fix it, but we also felt it was undersized and not optimal. It was below the size recommended by Rocna, and based on research, the Vulcan and a few other anchors seem to perform better. The 33kg Vulcan has a shorter shank and fits much better. The tip of the anchor does come close to the bow when fully in the roller, but the anchor can't move any closer at that point (no pun intended!) We have been very happy with performance of the anchor but it is still pretty new to us. See anchor tests on S/V Panope YouTube channel. The Vulcan ranks very highly. Rocna has pdfs on the site from which you can create a cardboard mockup of the anchor to test for fitting.

We have a 25kg Vulcan on our SO440 and it has been a great anchor. Sets right away and (knock on wood) it has not dragged once. We chose it over the original Rocna because of the bow sprit on the 440. It is certainly a good solution if the Rocna doesn't fit.
Warm regards,
Chuck

Not very much of help but now at least you know what anchor surely fits on the bow of the SO49. Following the advise from Loredo I bought a 30KG Spade anchor for my SO49 with bow sprit and it fits perfectly. Was a toss up between the Spade and the Vulcan but got better deal on the Spade. With 100M of 10mm chain I hope I will now be able to sleep at night without worrying the anchor will drag. Yet to be tested in a storm though. I now feel a lot happier I have the right size anchor for the boat . I can't believe the previous owner bought a 15Kg Rocna as his main anchor . I think it was based on the fact that it was the largest Rocna that would fit due to the top ring fouling the sprit. Thanks for all the advise - appreciated 👍👍

Good to hear you got it sorted out! Just one word of caution though... When you set the Spade back up slowly! These anchors set HARD when they bite. When we deployed the Spade the first time, I backed up as I was used to for years with the previous anchor(s) (a bit of speed in reverse). The Spade set and the boat just stopped on a dime, my wife nearly fell from the bow and I was worried the windlass was damaged...
Other than that, enjoy the new found toy.
