We are currently living aboard a 42DS and although it is quite comfortable for the 2 of us, things start to fall apart when we have guests. We are seriously considering upgrading to the 490. I want to hear from the 490 owners on what the deficiencies on the 490. For example, on the 42DS, the aft berth is great but the slapping on the stern is a killer. What things on the 490 could Jeanneau have done better?

I did a similar jump once from a 43DS to a 49DS and the main drawback was - more surfaces and storage to clean ! I hope that others will chime in with more factual observations, but I think you'll be quite happy.

I think Zanshin has just about said it all!
The boat thing is personal, the only down side is bigger boat, bigger bills, but here I am stating the obvious.
Think of the good thinks, bigger boat, bigger comfort and more stable sailing.
BTW all stern cabins slap with the waves, that's why we choice a master cabin up forward.

Please keep it coming. What I really want to know is how an enclosure would work on the 490 due to the fact there really is no hard backs on the 490 settee cushions. I realize that heading to the tropics as we are currently doing, there is no need for a solid enclosure with canvas but how would bug screens attach along the bottom edge?

After many years in the Caribbean, I've learned that flies and mozzies don't make it to the boat when at anchor and that my fly screens see no use at all. A dodger for wind and Bimini for the sun are important. I've thought about adding a hard chair assembly to my cockpit, but generally the normal cockpit cushions are sufficient.
I felt as if I'd doubled my boat size going from the 43 to the 49 and then re-doubled when going to the 57!
