Yanmar Control Panel how should it behave?

I have a new to me SO45DS with a 4JH4TE engine and the VDO type (earlier, with the analogue tacho, Stop button and key switch) NOT the newer type with the digital parameter display.

I think the display is type X-10 (??).  It looks like this one: link 

Anyhow, on turning the key to on, I'm surprised to see no lights, no beep nothing, just the tacho flips a bit and the hours counter comes on.

Is this normal behaviour?  I kind of expected at least the oil pressure warning light to come on before the engine starts up.  And maybe all the lights as a check they are working.

You are correct when you turn to ‘on’ you should see the various warning lights come on and hear the alarm sound. Sometimes this can take a couple of seconds after switching on but it should happen. Similarly, once the engine is running and when you have stopped it by pressing ‘stop’ you should once again hear the alarm and see the lights on until you turn the key back to ‘off’.

Thanks for the reply -that's what I figured.

I thought I'd done well by fixing the hours counter, but oh well, another problem to solve.

Obvious question but were the lights & alarm working correctly before you fixed the hours display? In which case the connections into the back are the first place to start.

OK, problem solved.  The issue was the Molex 6 pin connector between the board and the wiring harness had become corroded.

I did clean this up and used contact spray, but to no avail.  I ended up removing the Molex connector and soldering wires directly onto the board which then go to a SpeedSeal 5 way connector I've added to the loom.

Much better and probably how it should have been in the first place.
