My wife and I are about 5 years from retirement and looking forward to getting back into the sailing community. We were proud owners of a Sabre 28 for many years. Since then I have become enamored with new designs. While I love boats with classic lines, I don't think I could ever buy one again after looking at the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410.
We will be looking at San Diego as our home port. As we will be retired, we will be looking at cruising down the Baja peninsula and up into the Sea of Cortez. Would love to get owners opinions on the appropriateness of the Sun Odyssey 410 for this type of voyage.

Jlabate, We are on the East coast and have a SO440 not the 410, but we have cruised up and down the coast all on the outside and been very happy with our Jeanneau. It has done 300 mile passages, been in 10 foot seas and handled it all very well. It certainly has lived up to the adage that the boat can handle more than the crew.
Jeanneau makes an excellent coastal cruiser and what you are describing is coastal cruising. I think some people get confused with that verbiage. They hear coastal cruising and believe that means one can never leave protected water. The USCG defines it as not more than 100 miles offshore.
I believe you will find the 410 fun to sail, easy to handle and very comfortable at anchor which is where you will spend 90% of your time exploring all the great places it can take you. Congrats on your retirement!
Warm regards,
Chuck Osborne

We are loving our 410 and are using her to sail around the SW coast of England. Hopefully next year a bit further away! We have had her a year and slowly getting her as we want her. Things like extra pad eyes for safety lines, changing some of the plastic shelf supports to metal ones in the "workshop"(We have the two cabin version) and a few other things that other owners in this and the FaceBook group have mentioned.

I had a 42DS, about the same size. We were based in San Diego but regularly cruised sea of Cortez. Perfect size. You will need a water maker. Water is harder to get than diesel. Jeanneau tend to have small diesel tanks so if option for more fuel go for it. Winds are often too light or heavy for sailing. I only needed aircon in marinas so no need for generator. Always sunny so solar a great way to go. Go lithium. Fans. Have plenty. They really help. I also love the 410. Good luck. If bow sprit an option get it and a downwind sail. The sea starts 750 miles downwind from San Diego.

We have the 42 DS -- just got her.
We'll be sailing the eastern seaboard, from Maine to the Bahamas and on to the Caribbean in a couple years. After that, we'd like to head to the sea of cortez so post about your experience once you go!
