Greetings! I've contracted to purchase a new Jeanneau 51 with delivery in a year (I now have a SO 409), and would appreciate anyone's thoughts, including if any of the issues encountered by current owners have been addressed by Jeanneau?
Above was a bit ambiguous...I'd like to know if Jeanneau has addressed any of the common issues at the factory on new boats?

Just sold mine, not looking back! May be they addressed all of the issues but we had horrible experience. Vibrating flexofold prop, they couldn’t figure out; Generator brackets not holding generator down; Doors get misaligned and not closing; Companionway slider not sliding; Leaking dinghy davits that turned out are not supposed to be watertight; Swim platform bad design causing misalignment;
It’s just an abbreviated version of what we had to go through, I have list of probably hundreds of issues. We finally got rid of it three years later and went with another brand.

Me again...wonder if you bought new if you have survey? I will for sure! Contact me when you get yours I will give you all of the little stupid things to look for. I have everything documented shame on Jeanneau. Even stupid salon cushions velcros attachments placed upside down like they were deliberately sabotaging at the factory. Broken off hoses on AC pumps so condensation leaks to places you can imagine existed. I could go on and on brother.

You’ll probably regret posting this question here after you’ve contracted (maybe should have done it beforehand)! As I’ve said before I know 2 owners here in NZ who ordered news 51s at the same time and one had the usual new boat teething problems but the other had terrible trouble including structural issues including hull / rigging / chain plates integrity - requiring extensive boatbuilding work to correct. I’d never buy a new Jeanneau but instead a well-sorted lightly used 2-3yr old boat.

Maybe, but this will be my 2nd new Jeanneau so I'm fully aware of the teething process. My dealer and Jeanneau were very responsive on my new 409 issues...I love the 409 but now want larger. I'll visit the 51 in France during construction, have the completed boat surveyed before handover, and suspect that process will avoid many of the typical issues. My dealer is already communicating with Jeanneau on that front. Many thx for your input!

In which case you need your surveyor to do milestone checks during the build not at the end. To verify the quality of the things that are often hidden from view in the finished boat. That was the issue with my friend’s 51. The lay-up on the port side around the chain plates was flawed with huge gaps hidden underneath. But this was hidden behind the cabinetry until they cut it open.
Does Jeanneau give buyers’ surveyors access to the factory during the build to do inspections? That’s the kind of access I’d only expect you’d get with a custom build superyacht?

This is disturbing in the sense that it would appear that Jeanneau does not have a quality assurance program in place. I just purchased a 2016 SO 50DS and have not had any problems with it. I did however notice some sloppiness where there were holes drilled in the wood work that was not in direct line of sight, glue from the back of a mirror bleeding through to the front and the misalignment of wood grain cutout where the stringers come into the main saloon. These are minor things, but in my mind this lack of attention to detail may reflect the organizations culture at large. Will be watching the issues going forward, as we ponder the possibility of moving up in size with Jeanneau.

Right on Rod...those are pretty minor and prob not avoidable on a production boat. I'm thinkin' being pro-active with Jeanneau and dealer during build process, and having boat surveyed prior to handoff should help!

It sounds like you're onto it and especially if you've bought new before you will be well aware that dealers in particular will say and promise almost anything to get the sale but the reality of what happens after that is often very different.

Like others I have had problems with my new Jeanneau Yachts 51, commissioned In 2019, however, I am generally very pleased with the boat. Yes, bad quality control, but mainly minor, silly things, yes they should never have happened and although the dealer worked hard to rectify most, we still have a forward cabin door that doesn’t close properly and deck cushions with fittings that don’t line up. But I can forgive all of these problems as she sails well and is a pleasure to own. It’s important to add that the commissioning of your boat can make a big difference to your future problems. We were unlucky to have chosen a yard that did such a bad job that we had to employ riggers to right all the problems and damage that occurred from a badly stepped and tensioned mast.

One last thing, my Jeanneau 51 which arrived fully loaded with almost every box ticked in the option list weighted in at about half a million sterling in 2019, a lot of boat for the money.
An equivalent low volume manufacturer like Hallberg Rassy, Oyster or Discovery would cost at least three times the price. Even these more expensive boats can have their shakedown problems, I know as I once purchased a new Hallberg Rassy, obviously of a higher quality but it didn’t come without its initial problems.

Generator brackets weren't properly attached and generator would move around in its compartment. Sliding companionway door holding block broke off and rain water through screw holes would get on the top of the engine .

workmanship is so subpar its unreal how they could be so bad. Epoxy on the keel was put on the rusted surface causing it to separate. Bulkhead would move out of the place because it wasn't glued properly. cushions attachment velcros were upside down

Constantly standing water against plywood bulkheads from leaking davits causing plywood to degrade. falling ceiling panels (eventually almost all of them) Rust on standing rigging just after one ocean crossing makes me question stainless still quality.

Plastic rudder control sheive on the "yacht" broke on the year 2 of ownership; Condensation pumps were broken from the beginning Swim platform ladder is a joke. In unfolded position it is pressing agains swim platform very weak fiberglass edge causing it to crack.

I could go on and on. Boiled up 3 batteries in our excide house bank on our first year, prop vibration they couldn't figure out and we had to switch to different brand for our own money, their new designed swim platform that gets misaligned with time and would not lock in place, sliding top companionway door that all of a sudden just stopped sliding and so on and so on. Like I said I have it it all documented and photographed. And after I got rid of it, they wanted us to get Jeanneau 60, huh? SHAME ON THEM

Thx to you and Ania for very valuable info...I intend to be very proactive with dealer and Jeanneau to minimize issues...when you're paying someone the better part of a million for something by my lights it oughta be close to perfect? Altho my new 409 came with 15 minor issues, all of which were addressed except for factory drop damage on floor boards cuz matching boards couldn't be found, my fav was finding loose nuts, bolts and washers in bilge compartments!! I was told that was due to boat being built in US. NZL...what hull # is your 51?
