It is so easy that the lid fell down and crush your fingers and I cannot understand why the yacht manufactures does not use gas spring more often. Year 1989 I introduced the gas spring for www.seldenmast.com/ and www.benns.se/mast-rigg/rodkickar/benns to use inside the roodkicker.
Those who has tried to mount a gas spring have found that is not that easy. Several of times, it looks like a Swiss cheese (full of hole) on the lid and the body before the user are satisfied. I can also see more than 50% of the gas spring where mounted upside down!
However, does this effect anything on the function? YES.
This subject are crazy big but I will explain how to use a simple standard hydraulic damped gas spring. Normally you mount the pressure tube (the thicker part) on top. (Ok, now you will go out and look on your car, do not. The car manufactures sales and design group cannot accept that it looks for them “upside down”. Piston rood pointing upward like a hydraulic cylinder they like. The solution could be special dynamically damped gas spring with double sealing and oil chamber or other solutions).
If the gas spring just push up the lid then the pressure tube (the thicker part) should be on top. It is a small amount of oil in the tube. The purpose with the oil is two things, lubricate the sealing and create a hydraulic damping at the end for a smooth stop. Imagine that you turned it other way around then the oil will be in the bottom and the sealing on top will be dried out. In addition, the lid will rattle and stress the hinges. Worst case I have seen was in an ambulance the gas spring where mounted wrong way, the lifetime was about two weeks! I rejected the warranty claim. Normally are the lifetime 8-10 years. The demand from car industry are 30.000 cycle well defined. The gas nitrogen fills the gas spring. The pressure inside could be up to 4.300 Psi or 300 Bar.
It’s easy for me to use a licensed program to calculate the optimal function on the computer, but the function has to be tested IRL to get the right feeling.
If you have 23 and 26 cm between the screw in the box today measured from turning point then my bracket could be used.
