SO 40 steering wheel cables sheaves/blocks corrosion damage

During a recent maintenance inspection of our SO 40 (built in 1999) serious corrosion damage is discovered on the (Whitlock) steering wheel sheaves/blocks below deck. The cause of this steel corrosion is not known. 

Has anyone experienced also this specific corrosion situation on the steel sheaves/blocks? The maintenance inspector did not find any water leakage issue above the installation. 

I am looking for a professional repair or replacement measure and preferably a supplier in or nearby the Netherlands for the delivery of new sheaves/blocks.

Please advise.

Dear Swen,

Undersigned, Claes Nordfeldt,Stockholm have read about your problem with steering.
My Sun Odyssey 40 is also built 1999, and I Always regularily insepct (and worry) about my steering.
So far OK. Keep my yacht at present on Corfu, Gouvia marina, where I Always worry a lot about galvanization since despite having possibility o/b to checck whether polarization correct or not whenever shore Power is connected.
Would like to know where you managed to order new sheaves/blocks, plaese.

Vajer.pdf (115.26 KB)My boat was 1 year old (at that time it was owned by my older brother) and used less than 1.000Nm he had a seriously incident on his way to a port in a narrow channel and strong wind. The cable was not tighten up enough for the rudder.

He tried to use the bow thruster without success, drained the battery.

It is not easy to keep calm in a critical situation all the time.

Thanks for the voluntary Swedish sea rescue for this incident ended without any injured and minor material damage. After this incident, he bought at hand held VHF. To have the VHF down in the cabin without eye contact with the rescue team are not optimal.

What he could do was to use the autopilot in manual mode or se the spare tiller arm.

On the picture you could see a label from Lewmar, its only a serial number without part number.

I will investigate if the material are plain steel or stainless steel underneath that paint. If the bracket are not in proper material, I will make drawing in 2D, cut by waterjet at my brothers company in stainless steel, and let them be welded. I can always share the drawing.

Today I checked the material with a magnet. Its ceternely not made of stainless steel. Some quality of stainless could be magnetic but then its less magnetic. I would say this part from Lewmar are made of plain ferro steel and painted black. If I have time over I will make a drawing so you could upgrade this importandt part from your local welder.

Dear Claes,

I have ordered the new sheaves in January at the Jeanneau dealer Nautisch Kwartier in Stavoren NL.
De parts are not on stock available. Delivery time is approx. 7 weeks.
Spare parts No. 7 and 8 in the encloses steering system specification list.
