I see there are quite a few familiar names still posting. Well, after 2.5years of being boatless after selling my Sun Odyssey 40, today my offer was accepted and I have just signed the purchase agreement on a new to me, used Jeanneau yacht. I'm excited to put an end to crewing on others boats and to be honest, returning to Jeanneau ownership was not something I really anticipated. Not telling what I bought for now

I never really left the Jeanneau world as 99% of my sailing in the past 2 years has been as crew on a 36i

I'm excited to put an end to crewing on others boats and to be honest, returning to Jeanneau ownership was not something I really anticipated. Not telling what I bought for now I'm more interesting in what it's like to be boatless for 2.5 years? I have only experienced one season without a boat, but to be fair, I did have an order in for a new build and frankly was too busy purchasing all those extras one needs to adorn a new boat to feel hard done by, have passed a summer without sailing. On many occasions, when faced with large or going maintenance and repair costs, I have threatened, no, that's too strong a word, imagined what it would be like not having a boat. I think of all the money I would save and what I could spend it on. The thought always seems to revert back to to buying a boat and then I realise I have one, what a relief that is. Regarding your new acquisition, you refer to friends boats and that you have been boatless yet with this new purchase you use the words "used Jeanneau Yacht" as apposed to a Jeanneau model. I would hardly call myself Sherlock Holmes, but would that imply, this is a boat coming from the Jeanneau Yachts range, a 51 or 54 perhaps?

Hoppy, it's good that you're back. Dare I ask whether you went for a cruising or racing boat? That might make our guessing game more interesting.

Welcome back.
I believe Jeanneau did make some trailer sailers thru the early 2000 relm. 70s-80s they did for sure.

I won't answer that I will say that compared to when I bought Jessabbe, my circumstances are very different. I bought the SO40 for solo sailing around the greek islands. Now I have a wife, a 4 year old daughter and a dog. Whilst we live in Melbourne with no interesting cruising and cold water. I am working remotely for a Brisbane organisation and we fully intend to sell up and move to Brisbane, with its warm water downwind races, taking boats to idyllic tropical cruising areas.

Great to see you here again Hoppy, keen to see pics of the new boat, congratulations. You will eventually see it. How's you 36i been going? I've been enjoying racing on the 36i and we had a bit of success winning a couple of pursuit series on PHS.

Hi Hoppy, The 36i is going well, couple of great day sails recently from Geelong to the oil rig off Werribee and back. Mostly day sailing on Corio Bay though with an annual tip into Bass Strait in March.

Have you seen that the ORCV is having a cruising division for the King Island race on March 6th? I'm hoping to do the race if I can get the boat up to cat 2 in time, otherwise I "cruise".

Have not seen that one. I prefer destinations that are not crowded where I get a good choice of anchorages. My choice would be Three Hummock Island where there are plenty of good places to stop for any wind direction.

Being as you bought a boat........I can see a 39 or 42 "iP" or if you can found an older Sun fast 40 being good options to cruise with a family and yet still have a good turn of speed out doing some buoy races.
Altho I have seen some SF 3200's for a what I would call low price point. But probably a bit small for family cruising. I doubt the 3600 has come down too low in price assuming you bought a used one.......

The new boat does not have a plotter but at least it has new B&G Triton 2 instruments. So whilst I wait for the purchase to settle , I've already bought a Vulcan 9, NAIS500 and splitter. Not wanting to wait, I set them up for bench testing. I was a little surprised to find out that I needed to run power through the NMEA2000 backbone to enable the Vulcan to detect the AIS. I thought the power was only needed if there were instruments or transponders on the backbone.

Marty There are a couple of SF3600's for sale here, but they are way too expensive at about double what I got for Jessabbe.

Just for the sake of it, here are some of the boats I was very interested in at various times. Because I did not know that I would have the opportunity to move to warmer waters and the we had zero interest in family cruising, I was looking at stripped out race boats. The only concession to comfort was a plumbed toilet and bunks for "camping". Inglis 39. Many Sydney to Hobarts under it's belt. Very well looked after.

Elliot 1050 80's Kiwi rocketship. I probably could have got it dirt cheap but it needed a lot of time and money to get it back up to scratch.

Young 11 Another Kiwi rocketship. This particular one was setup for solo ocean racing but has cruising comfort. This one holds the record for the fastest Brisbane to Gladstone for an under 40 footer. A couple of other Y11's have been listed, but this was the best

Heavily modified Mumm 36 This boat might have been 25 years old, but it looked like 5 years old. The misses loved it because of it's condition (and perhaps that she knew we could not go away for several weeks cruises). The boat has a new keel, new mast (further aft), no runners (unless using the fat head main) and a very competitive IRC rating.

There have been 3 different 1D35's for sale. I was very interested in this one especially as it is one of 2 built with a wheel. I was prepared to live with the very open interior for the head.
