I'm having difficulty engaging forward gear, some of the time, when the gear box is cold.(first half-hour) Engine type volvo 39HP 2002 boat.
Has anybody had simlar trouble and what can be done to resolve this?

Familiar problem! Is mainly caused by use of wrong type of oil! The shift conus does not manage to brake the oil film. Use an oil quality 10W-40, but NOT synthetic! You may have to 'wash' out the old oil befor adding new. Use a mix of 50% kerosine and 50% eng oil. Let the engine run at low idle, shift in/out of gear some times, drain out the mix and add new oil. In worst case You will have to dismantle the gearbox and grind the shift conus and gear-conus with "Carborundum" to roughen the surface. Another thing is to check if you got the right size of propeller. Too light propeller does not give the needed "resistance" when engaging.
