Not sure how easy it is to remove but then put it in a pan of water and heat it up to see if it opens. Needs to be near boiling as it is not under pressure.

Hi VASCO, No witchcraft, Dismantle the unit. you should be able to read on it the opening temperature. (Usually 89 degree celtuce) Boil water in a small pot use a gage to bring it to the opening temperature, throw the unit into the hot water and check that it opens. It is easy to see it opens up against the spring load. Now, lower water temperature in about 20 degrees , put unit into the pot and check if it opens ,it should not. End of test. If unit does not open - your engine will heat up. If unit keeps open - your engine will warmup to working temperature very slow or even will not reach working temperature. Unit price is relatively low. FYI, even closed, unit will allow small amount of cooling liquid to go through at all times.

We had our thermostat fail on us. Obviously in the closed poistion and needless to say when we really needed to use the engine. I have now made an adjustable thermostat. Well actually it isn't a thermostat, it is a water flow restrictor. Yes - our engine takes more time to reach operating temperature. But after a bit of mucking about with the threaded adjustment our engine sits at normal operating temp without the risk of a thermostat failing. It is a direct replacement for the exsisting stat - in fact it is part made up from the old failed stat (just punishment for failing on is I think!!). This mod would not be suitable for the hardened winter sailors / or cold climate.
I will try and find some pictures of what I done.
Cheers
Ian

Always scary to release bolts of the thermostat to.get him out . Specially with an older engine , they sometimes get so stuck that breaking them is a present danger . Maybe a temperature gun could come to the rescue Vasco . Measure before and after to check if the temps align . I believe they open around 80* , could be wrong though .

Remove the lead (wire) from there thermo stat. Ground it on the engine block. The readout should spike. If you are still getting erroneous readings once reconnected, then it is the thermo stat at fault.
You could also test the unit in boiling water.
