Any great ideas for storing fenders while underway?

we store 3 fenders in the anchor well when under way and one in the aft laz . We normally dock with 4 fenders. It's not great, but it's workable.

We tie them to the lifeline on the transom.

With careful arranging you can get 6 in the starboard cockpit seat locker - as long as you don’t want to use it for anything else! (42DS) I also wedge one in each corner of the push pit to act as a back rest.

So, no one uses the stainless wire baskets on deck? I was originally thinking that, but have seen them used less and less it seems.

The wire baskets are common on power boats in my area, but I’ve never noticed them on sailboats.

I like my fenders out of sight when sailing. We carry 8 large fenders on board. 4 of them fit in the anchor locker, a d the other 4 go in the aft liferaft locker, although when we go on longer trips where more storage is needed some of them will likely get relegated to the "garage".

We purchased 4 Solovela Ocean Fenders in 2015 and love them for dock usage and out of the storage on the safety lines when not in use. WE can also use them as a step from the dock to the boat in transient slips and as a backrest over the aft rails The covers have offered great protection, but the zippers are cheap & subject to corrosion. They are not cheap. When needed, we also carry 2 round large fenders if we need to allow rolling against a dock & they are stored in the dingy until needed

I was thinking about getting some inflatable fenders, they pack down well for storage.

We 'tie' ours to the lower rail and leave hanging horizontally.

I keep two large and four medium sized fenders in the aft port side lazaret in a SO42DS. It is a huge locker and handles the fenders ok. It is interesting to hear some sailors keep some fenders in the anchor locker. I’ve never thought of that. Also great to hear of alternatives to what I do.
Just so I can sleep at night, what do people store in the aft port side lazaret in a SO42DS?
Regards
Trevor

I also keep mine in the anchor locker, however downside is you have to get them all out quickly if you need to anchor in an emergency.

Regards Trevor Hi Trevor - I made a simple plywood shelf in the anchor locker of our 42DS, I just placed it on top of the strengtheners which run horizontally and bedded it down with sealant. We can store either 6 empty jerry cans or 4-5 fenders without messing with the anchor chain. As for our port locker... spare anchor, diesel jerry can, lots and lots of rope, some more fenders, the rudder for the hydrovane... and more. Incidentally - while we are on port locker contents, while crossing the pond I had to do a quick repair of the engine exhaust through-hull, water was leaking through the bolt holes. Worth remembering if anyone has water ingress from aft but can't find it - its hidden under the wood panels along the hull so took a bit of hunting before we realised what it was. I've very much digressed from the thread here... Rebecca

Hi Trevor! In the aft port side lazaret, we have a Mastervolt 3.5 Genset installed plus the back anchor chain & rode bag, kyack oars, lines, deck brush & bucket, spare parts in the side compartment (i.e., zincs) & SSB AT140 & Kiss Antenna.

The 2 sausage fenders sit upright just behind the shelf, not a big deal to remove them when anchoring. My lazarette is pretty full with about 8 sausage fenders and my folding passarel. Shelf and cubby have long spare power cable, antifoul, primer, 2 x 5l engine oil, 1 x 5l coolant, spare lines and a few other bits. Top shelf holds normal power cable, lots of adapters and misc. smaller cans. It also holds my 3.3hp outboard (I extended the bulkead bac to and glassed it to the stern). I can get at cables, oil etc. easily but have to remove 2 fenders before lifting the outboard. All fenders need to com out to remove the passarel but I do that anyway. I am not going to fit anything else into that locker. Others aren't much better (spare anchor, generator, 100l spare diesel, spare chain & warp for anchor plus huge number of lines. You don't want to look inside the locker behind the aft cabin bed, at least that's all very light but bulky stuff.

Interesting idea re a false floor in the anchor locker - that could work really well. I have no stringers there, would have to bond some shelf supports to hull but thats not a big problem. Need to have a closer look at this.
Thanks for the idea!

We built this sub-floor and screwed it into the side stringer . While we have our second anchor strapped in there, there is room for fenders. An aluminum "U" channel was secured to the aft edge to the keep the change from eating through the teak over time
