Just testing out the postimage ipad thing, and a snap from today with the new drone, ( DJI Mavic Mini 249g heavy) not any wind to play with, but great to be back on the water isn't it ! ..... see, it doesn't always rain in North Wales ! This drone induces anxiety! but cheaper than a mate with a helicopter. CB

If that is an example of the photos you can expect I think it is sensational. That photo is so clean it almost looks like a computer generated image. Absolutely beautiful.

Thanks Trevor, I took some bad ones as well, still learning what works and what doesn't.
No pixels were adjusted, just point and shoot, with the auto camera setting, the only downside to this drone is that being light weight it doesn't like more than 15mph winds, and it doesn't automatically follow the boat, you have to fly it. Still a fun thing to play with when the wind is light.

Looks like an early morning in Greece! Are you allowed to travel more than 5 miles in a boat with lockdown?

Greek temperatures as well! We can travel about 5 miles to get to the boat, can go out to sail but can't go to another port or stay out overnight, no actual limit on sailing distance to my understanding, although all are advised not to depend on any rescue services and so not go too far away ...... not. exactly a clear set of rules, just glad to be back afloat, even if just for a day sail. Stay well

As you say just nice to be back on the water.... Our boat is basking on the hard in Greek sunshine. Should be just entering our 5th week afloat . I dread to think how much Gadifi dust (sand blown up from the Sahara) is being baked onto the decks. Enjoy!!

Beautiful picture, I must really get back to North Wales ! There was good easterly wind up here on the Cumbrian coast on Thursday so if you has the same I'm guessing that's Snowdonia or the Lleyn Peninsula in the background ?

You guess correctly, Snowdonia aft, Pwllheli and Pen Llyn off the bow.

I was tempted with the mini but saw lots of stories about them flying off by themselves and people were adamant that the drone was at fault. I was pretty certain they were just being overwhelmed by wind and then running out of battery power. Wind can be a lot more at height than ground level. I would probably worry about flying over water and losing it. I finally decided to leave it until things settle down a bit. Restrictions during early lockdown would probably prevent me flying one. I'd probably have to keep below 2m until clear of houses. Nearest walks are on high ground with pretty dense trees or fields with large cows. Pretty good chance of getting stuck in a tree, blown away or surrounded by cows. No chance of sailing either as my boat is in Greece. I'll have another look at it in a few months.

As in my original posting, anxiety is produced flying over water. I was also originally concerned about signal strength and it flying off, but flew 2 miles away on land, ( and flew back), so figure that 1/2 a mile at sea wouldn't be a problem, also less wifi interference at sea. Windy days are not going to work with this drone, but on windy days I have a much bigger more exciting toy to play with ...... YACHT = yet another cash hungry toy. Hope you get to play with your toy soon. CB

The DJI drones tend to say "it's too wind - land" and it is advice best heeded. My son flies Drones for a living and at times as to ignore this advice. On one occasion filming over the lip of a volcano one sudden blast of turbulence shock the battery free and both it and the drone fell around 150ft to the ground. Drone was easy to find as he had the GPS co-ordinates just prior to losing power, the battery took hours but he couldn't leave a damaged lipo battery lying around.
The drone lived to fly another day after a bit of repairing!!

The drone lived to fly another day after a bit of repairing!! My DJI Spark, the cheapest of the DJI line, can do over 40km/h so it would take quite a bit of wind to overwhelm it. I have flown it on fairly windy days without any problems. My biggest concern is take off and landing on a moving boat because the take off and landing routines are automated. I am tempted to try it...if I lose it I will have an excuse to buy a new Mavic Air!

The spark would be well suited, I couldn't buy a spark as they seem to be discontinued so went with the mini. Landing and take off although 'automated' can still be done from a hand, and is a better way, both best done from the stern. having caught it at the end of a flight you can either hold the left stick down to stop the blades, or flip the drone upside down, it will assume it has crashed and power off ....... then sit down to get over the anxiety.
An Air would be great, but I'm saving pennies for when my old Raymarine tech fails, and it would be a lot of money to drop in the sea, ........ having said that, ...... isn't that what all sailors do anyway.
Go fly ! CB

That didn't sound like a fun destination ! .... but looking on google maps it looks like a great sailing area. if that is your house on the north coast of Hernando with the long jetty I will be extremely jealous!
Have a great time, and I look forward to your first snap. CB

Very scenic, with lots of sheltered anchorages and warm waters. Looking forward to getting away!

No experience with the DJI Spark but all of their products are pretty reliable.
Constant wind is not a worry, unless you are trying to make headway into one that is faster than your drone can fly of course. Rapid changes in wind velocity (turbulence) is the thing that can and does catch them out from time to time.
I have never experienced it myself but also flying low over water can really upset their sonic sensors and many people turn them off for low, over water, flight. Is Drone flying in Canada restricted to the same extent as Europe or are they pretty relaxed about it?
Vancouver!!! What a great sailing area.... Actually what an overall fantastic place to live. My work used to take me there regularly and if I was a young man I would be knocking on the door of immigration right now.
Do SunSail still charter out of Coal Harbour? I heard they were moving out.
