Hi everybody. I've a SO 49 (2005) with 3 heads, and 3 polietileno reinforced holding tanks, like the pic attached. Attachment DeletedMy intention is convert two of them in additional fuel tank, connecting to the main fuel tank with valves to cut off and cut on this connection. The diesel will run for gravity cause the main fuel tank is under floating line and this holdings tanks are two feet above. The question is: could I've some problem in a long term storing diesel in this polietileno tanks....? I guess is the same material used to build the original fuel tank... really? Thanks a lot for the comments.

Hi, I have made polyethylene fuel tanks, the difference is at a microscopic scale, when making for fuel we use a cross linked polyethylene, you can't tell the difference by looking or feel, but non crosslinked does allow fumes through. However, my tanks were made for petrol, diesel could well be fine in any poly tank, you might ask techtanks as they will know the limitations of the materials as they make fuel water and waste tanks.
The breathing of the holding tank may need modification, and really long term storage of fuel can of course result in fuel problems but I'm sure you know all about that.
I have seen some folk who exchange one domestic water tank for a fuel tank, ......... but that depends on how you use your boat.

While the idea is intriguing and if the material is "diesel-safe" and the plumbing can be done I wonder about the legality in waters where holding tanks are required (which includes the EU). It is just a large amount of effort when each holding tank only holds 80 or less liters... That is just 4x 20l canisters which can be stored anywhere aboard. In my case I had the factory replace one 400l water tank with a fuel tank, so I have to admit that I don't have a fuel capacity issue.

The idea is keep one holding tank to use in close waters. Just like I’ve only one head. The others two holding tanks can give me a 50% more fuel capacity, for me is great value. The only doubt is about using the green holding tanks only when I need, or change for especial fuel tank to allow me store fuel no matters how long. The pro feature of this modification is charging by caps in deck and unchanging by valve to the main tank: no jerrycans over deck.
