42DS with a 9 month old. Have been using a bassinet from a pram / stroller to date but he’s now growing too big for that. And he can climb out of it so no good putting it on the forward bunk anymore it has to be on the floor. How do other folks get their 9-24 month old kids sleeping safely & securely onboard? Any ideas gratefully received!

There no problem with the baby at all can sleep and crawl everywhere... the real true is that what ever is dine is not up to the father ... and no matter what he thinks ir ask ir do it is happening whatever the mother decide... e.g no point suggesting anything May daughter sailed with us from 2 weeks old in the cold solent weather , incredibly hot in greece and in spain , balearics and south if france - we survived a tornado without issues... In brief do whatever the mother think is right and you will have hapyy life..

We built in a removable 2 foot high plexiglass panel across the aft end of the foc'sle bunk. With cushioned hull sides, this became a safe sleeping and play area which we could observe while underway by peering forward from the companionway. Our son was happy here even when beating in moderate conditions. When at anchor in calm good weather we suspended him from the spinnaker pole on the foredeck in a jolly jumper.

Ok I like the plexiglass panel idea for the fore cabin - do you have any pics? How / where did you get it from / made? How was it secured? Do you recall dimensions? Great idea but a few Qs - sorry! Thanks

On a much smaller boat, we used a similar system with netting rather than a stiff panel. It worked fine when our son was sleeping, but it didn't provide a stable hand-hold when he was standing up. The advantages included the fact that it was easy to store when not in use, and was very inexpensive.

Our plexiglass screen was created 35 years ago, so I have no pictures or drawings. Basically, we glued/screwed a 2"x4" teak rib from the bunk lip to the underside of the deck on each side [cut to shape on the outboard edge] of the hull. Each rib had 3 bolt holes to hold the plexiglass. I made a corregated cardboard template for the 5/16" plexiglass and then cut it from a 2x 6 foot sheet. The plexiglass top edge was then capped with 2x2 teak strip to protect our son when lifting him over the barrier and to provide rigidity to the sheet of plex'y. When removed and not in use we tucked under the opening edge of the mattress. We initially tried using mesh but could not adequately tension it over the 6 foot spread of the opening, so opted for our fixed solution.

We used a pop-up bed until he was 15-18 months (eg: google Peapod travel bed), in one of the aft cabins. Also very flexible to play (when small) and with the possibility to close down when you need to store it - especially in a smaller boat.
Then moved to a bed guard rail. A standard one for home beds, that you can find on Amazon, etc. Simply of the right size - or resizable - so that it can work on the aft bunk.
