Hi there,
Just invested in a rather nice new 150% roller reefed genoa for my SO40, problem being that the existing cars are too far inboard and fwd to enable correct sail trim
Ideally I need 1.5 metre length track with cars further aft and outboard but deck space is limited, also have some concerns about stability and loads in fitting new thru deck fittings.
Any advice greatly appreciated
Thanks! Scott

Personally, I would look at and get a Harken setup that fits your boat. At the harken site is a program that will tell you what you need based on your rig, how you sail etc.
As far as strength putting new tracks etc on. Typically some BIG fender washers below deck will suffice. On the other hand, if you are going to be putting LOTS of strain, then some kind of bigger backing plate will be needed.
I would also imagine, that once you get the correct placement of the carr's the self, you will probably find that the new track should be on par with what you have. UNLESS, the sail maker measured, and made the sail incorrectly.
While you are doing this, get the carr's that have a line adjustment to them, vs the push pins, this way from the cockpit you can adjust the carrs to where you need them for best sailing speed etc. You may find, that all you have to do is lengthen the track too. Not sure I would try to put the track too far outside, as this will make the pointing ability of the boat generally speaking go down ward, ie farther off wind. And possibly not allow the adjustment you need.

Hi,
I also wouldn't think you need to the have track outboard. There's virtually no need for it, the only thing I can imagine is if you're broad reaching and the leech doesn't stay open but in that case I'd just rig what I'd call an outf***er (it could be a block attached to a line or a line from aft cleats to mid ship cleats or whatever fits on your boat), which keeps the sail open.
Jeanneau seems to have the shortest genoa tracks of all the boats I've seen and I guess they only work well if your sails are of equal size to their originals.
