Ahoy,
We are new owners of a DS42 we acquired in Sarasota and have re positioned to Palm Beach FL by way of the Keys.
I would be interested to know how many DS42s were produced over what years and if there is a group dedicated to the model?
Best,
Maurie Rosenberg

Hi Maurie! Welcome to the forum. What year is your SO42DS? Not sure how many were made, but there is a great deal of information on this website from some very knowledgeable owners. I think everyone is open to questions and offer help. There is no dedicated SO42DS site that I am aware of. Congratulations on your purchase and have a great time!

Hi Maurie and welcome to the club. I think SO 42DS is a great boat and we enjoy it very very much. Ours is 2006, one of the first built. I think is the hull number 24. If you are interested in anything regarding there are many very knowledgeable owners of this particular model here and many others with different models but still very valuable for advice or opinion. Congratulations and calm sea!

Congratulations. We purchased ours ... a 2008 ... this time last year and have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have found this forum very helpful. A couple of months ago, I searched the site for “42DS” and found many interesting posts. Best of luck with your new boat...

Congrats on your purchase. Not sure how many were built. I have had my 2006 (one of the first) since 2017. Sailing Lake Ontario and the 1000 Islands. Great boat and lots of great people in this forum. Welcome.

Excellent choice! I have hull #8 2006, in my ownership since 2011 and much loved. Extremely good value for money in my view (for a boat).

Can anyone tell me if it is normal to have a flow of water through the battery compartment when the generator is running?

Does anyone else have a DS 42 in the Palm Beach FL area?

It is NOT normal to have any water in the bilges, especially near the batteries!

Hi Mxrsail,
I don’t have a DS42, but I am quite sure there should be no water running inside the boat, and definitely not in the battery compartment, whether the generator is running or not.
I would by looking into the generator compartment and everywhere else to find and stop that leak.
Perhaps first stop the generator and close the through hull valves if the flow is severe.
If it is a small leak and the bilge pump is coping, possibly look for the leak before you close the valves as it will be easier to find.
If it is only when the generator is running, that may give some clue as to where to look first.

We don’t have generator since we like silence (went the solar way) but I would check (and double check) the cooling system of genset, especially the pipes and fittings for coolant (sea water). Is the water in the bilge salty? We had similar problem but only when we washed the decks. Small crack on one elbow for discharging water from port helm station was the cause. Then again, where are your batteries? Normally they are below master cabin bed on port side. I fitted some additional batteries in underfloor compartment just behind the bilge but rised on a simple construction. Occasionally we found a little bit of water there but it’s now dry since we found and repair deck leakage. I can’t imagine you have water in the original batteries compartment since boat should be flooded in that case.

I have a 2006 42 DS and a 4KW Panda Generator located in the lazarette. At the end of last season I noticed a similar leak to the one you describe and I believe it is coming from the seawater connections to the heat exchanger or the heat exchanger itself. When I can get back to the boat after things open up again I intend to strip it all out and take a good look at it while I am doing the service. The only problem is it is a pig to work down there in such a small space. What make of generator do you have fitted and where is it located. That all said we love our 42DS Good luck with yours!
