We have a 2005 40.3 Sun Odyssey with fore and aft water tanks. Both tanks now read full, even when they are empty. The yard disconnected the wires to the tank and the gauge still showed full. We are considering replacing the Scheiber digital gauge but don't want to if the problem is elsewhere. Anyone have experience with this problem.

Hello Frank,
We have not had this problem but I can say that on our yacht the water tank gauges and the fuel tank gauge are quite inaccurate. They give an indication but that is as kind as I can be.
If it is like an SO42DS, the tank sensors terminate in a "control box" that is powered from a common point and requires a ground connection. Prior to doing anything with the Scheiber panel I would ensure those control boxes have power.
Regards,
Trevor

Thank you for your suggestion. Will look for a faulty ground connection before ordering any parts. Much appreciated.

Frank, I suggest checking for 12 volts and ground connection at the control box.
It would be great to hear what you have found when this problem is fixed.

I had this problem too. In my case it had to do with slime or biofilm on the stainless steel sensors inside the tank.
I opened the big hole on top of the tank. From there you can reach the sensors. And while the tank is open give the whole thing a good wipe down.
The biofilm creates a sort of shortcut thereby generating a 'full' indication on the display.

I had a similar problem with multiple unexplained issues. It turned out to be the hull to deck multiple pin connectors used when the boat was built.
These are located behind the panel in the rear of the forward hanging locker, which was cause in my case by a leak from around the deck filler for the forward water tank.

Hello guys, First question for Trevor: What is "control box"? Are you referring to the Scheiber gauge which shows tank levels by a series of three green lights and one red light? One row for the fore and one for the aft tank. Or is there a separate "box" where the leads from the fore ad aft tanks meet. However, the schematic does not show such a connection.
We also opened the forward tank and wiped (as best we could) some of the leads which made no difference. Actually with the leads from the tank disconnected, the tank still shows "full".
And for Chris D: What are the "pin connections" you mentioned? Are these electrical or mechanical?
I do appreciate all the input as we attempt to isolate the problem. The Scheiber gauge still seems to be the likely culprit.
Thanks, Frank

The boat is built and pre wired in 2 pieces. There are two 25 pin electrical harness connectors one for the positive side of the circuits and the other negative.
With my boat a small drip over the years lead to corrosion inside the connectors.

Finally getting around to tackling the faulty gauge problem.
What did you do to fix the problem? Did you replace the corroded connections? And where are the connectors located in the harness? The schematic does not show the wires going to a harness but it's a schematic drawing, not an actual wiring diagram.
Hope you fixed the problem.

I don't know if the 2005 Scheiber unit is the same as the 2008/9 version. If it is then the following might be of interest.
Each tank has a separate control box to convert the sensor output to a voltage, a step for each level. It can have a unit on top with rods going down into the tank or simply use stainless screws peircing the tank at different levels. Pretty easy to tell which by looking at a tank.
It would be unusual for both tank boxes to fail at the same time unless there was some sort of severe voltage spike. If both failed at the same time then the fault is more likely to lie at the display end.
If both failed at different times then the sensors or boxes could be at fault. I can pretty much give you chapter and verse on the unit I have as I replaced my Schieber display with a DIY version and a DIY board to convert the tank level signals.
