My SO36i has the Yanmar keyless engine panel in the cockpit. Occasionally the engine will fail to turn over when the rocker switch is pushed but it usually fires up on the second or third push. This appears to be an electrical problem probably with a bad contact somewhere in the system. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

I experienced the same symptoms on my SO 35. It turned out to be the starter motor solenoid. I replaced the starter because the solenoid alone was more expensive than buying both together. I got an Hitachi starter for about $65 US online.

Usual suspects:
1. Relay(may be a fuse non stable connection if you have one) 2. (-) engine connection (very rare + connection/cable) 3. Starter solenoid 4. Starter brushes
Diagnostic:
1. Does is make the “click” sound from the starter or not?
If yes- then starter brushes etc. or (-) connection If not - relay or solenoid or connections
2. You can bypass the low power connections and relay by manually supply (+) to the solenoid ( but very carefully to not touch the engine with (+)
In brief it is annoying problem I usually have spare starter and alternator on my boat as after the intermittent problem the thing get permanent and you can be stuck with no engine.
If it stop starting and you need a temp solution give tbe starter a good kick with a hammer it may help if the solenoid is the issue

I had this problem on my SO37. It had to do with the long cable run from the starter switch to the solenoid. At first i replaced the starter button, but that didn't help.
I solved this by putting a helper relay just in front of the solenoid. I used a standard 12Volt 30 Amp automotive relay.
Move the wire comming from the starter button, from the solenoid to the coil of the helper relay. The other coil contact connects to the ground. Connect the making contacts (of the helper relay) to the + and the solenoid. Problem solved for the last 10 years now.

Hello, everybody. I had a Sangria, there it was the start button, if present. Now with the Sun Liberty it was the starter himself. The Yanmar 3 Series has a little problem at the start. The engine hits back briefly if the throttle is not at 0 zero. When the throttle is a little on throttle, the engine makes a turn backwards during the start if you stop starting, this overlaps unfortunately with the direction of rotation of the starter at this moment. It causes the starter motor to block, worst of all if the starter bell or the shaft of the starter motor breaks! So, always start without accelerating!
I got this information from the starter manufacturer, and the behavior of this engine is known.
My bell and shaft were broken!
Greetings uli

My 54HP Yanmar was completely dead after about about 6 months until the dealer gave me a replacement switch and everything was fine. The Start switch had failed and nothing at all happened when it was pressed. I got the impression that it wasn't that unusual as the dealer gave me a new one immediately from some spares in a drawer.

Thanks everybody for your replies. Update: I disconnected the plug that connects the engine wiring to the boat loom to check for corrosion. It looked fine, I had protected it with a plastic bag in case of water leaks. Since reconnecting every start over three days has been perfect. So I have cured the symptom but not the problem, time will tell.
