The stitchery in my 7-year-old Elvstrom Lazy Bag seems to be rapidly disintegrating this season. I'm hoping that it stays together enough to get through October and then I'll have it re-sewn and otherwise reinforced by a local canvas shop during the off-season. My guess is that doing so will get me through another one or two seasons and then it will need outright replacement (if not sooner).
There are several good canvas shops nearby who can "clone" the bag. Any experiences on re-stitching vs. replacement?

Karl,
I'm in the process of replacing my main cover right now, altho I am not sure how old the cover is. I've had our boat just over 3 yrs. Had a few things restiched the first summer. I personally think the cover is older than 7 yrs, maybe original?
I'm replacing more to do with my new main when flaked a bit larger than the old one, along with 6" longer on the foot, so the old one does not cover the sail that well to at all. Neighbor wants to buy my old cover, as it is in better shape than theirs! So spend $500 on a new one, get 50'ish on old one........enough for a beer or two! and or partial payment on the matching lifeline and tiller covers!
Personally, in the end, if it cost say 50% of a new cover, a new cover might be in order. BUT, if the fabric is still good, 50% is cheaper than a new one either way. The %'s will also depend upon the actual cost too. $10 vs $20 and the $20 is on the shelf vs a 1 wk wait, "new!" If stiching is 1 week, and new cover is 1 wk, 250 vs 500. I could see either way!

Karl,
You have had better luck than I. My boat was commissioned in 2005, and the stitching started coming apart in 2007. I've hand stitched the entire zipper earlier this summer.
The fabric is still in good condition, so I intend to keep stitching it back together until the fabric also needs replacing.

Karl,
I had a similar experience to Don, The stitching along the zipper lasted from 2006 to 2008 but only with extensive hand stitching. I had the zipper replaced and an extra 25mm of cloth added down both sides to give a bit more room in the bag. Also the zipper is now better protected by a larger overlap so it should last. Cost A$150. Why did I waste my time with all that hand stitching?
