Hi all,
For some reason or another, the engine battery is in a battery box in the aft port cabin in the v between mattress and side. It should not be there and gets in the way (and looks bad). Can't see where it should be located normally. The house batteries (2 each side) look ok and there is a charger and an inverter in 2 cabinets in each cabin. Where should engine battery normally go? Pic would be nice please. Thanks in advance.

Hi Colin,
Believe the normal battery fit for the 43DS is a bank of four under the aft berth(s). Two under the front of each mattress. On our set up one of the two on the port side is the start battery. The charger is under the small seat in that cabin (port side). Not a good place as they only installed one vent and when it gets warm the cooling fan only circulates the warn air around the small enclosure cooling nothing. A second vent placed to create a through flow of air sorted that out.
When the batteries come up for renewal I will be moving the eng battery to be just forward of the engine under the cabin sole. and expanding the house battery set to use all four under the berth(s). Will try to post pics next week

Thanks Alenka. Not sure why this extra battery is there then. Will make some enquiries of the old owners and provide feedback here. I have not looked in front of the engine yet to see what space is available as those panels are screwed down. First opening one is the fuel tank.
Cheers all

Hi and congrats on getting your 43DS.
In our boat the engine battery is the port side one, closest to the engine. We originally had only two house batteries but added a third to use the space up and all 4 slots are now used. I would guess that the previous owner wanted to extend the house bank to 4 batteries and has made a creative use of space for the engine start battery !
Is your boat at Gulf Harbour ?. If so, we are on your pier and I’d be happy to share our experiences....

I have four golf cart batteries, one Group 31 engine starting battery, and one Group 24 genset starting battery under the bed in our 43DS.
As originally delivered, there were three group 31 house batteries and one Group 31 starting battery in the four battery trays. All of the house batteries were in parallel, and they were almost dry when we bought the boat from the dealer. The first mod we had done to the boat was the installation of a genset and air conditioning, and the genset installer cut a hole in the floor of the storage tray under the bed on the port side, and dropped the Group 24 battery into that hole, in a plastic box. It was held in place with straps.
The next upgrade was to get rid of the old house batteries and install golf cart batteries. I had to enlarge the footprint of two of the trays to fit the golf cart batteries, because they are just slightly larger than the French equivalent to Group 31. I left the starting battery in one of the trays, and I cut a hole in the floor of the storage tray on the stbd side, and installed one of the golf cart batteries back there. It is secured with steel angle irons (protected from corrosion), and threaded rod. The other 4 batteries are also held down with threaded rod across the top. I never trusted the rope that Jeanneau provided to hold them in place.
The four golf cart batteries are wired in parallel/series to form one large bank. After 13 years, we are on our second batch of golf cart batteries, and they seem to be in good shape. We just recently installed our third engine starting battery, and our second genset battery. We also have another Group 31 up fwd for the anchor windlass and the bow thruster.
It was interesting to do the work - I was able to re-use all of the original Jeanneau wiring, and I only had to make up about 6 pieces of new large gage wire for the install.
Oh, and our inverter is also installed under the bed in the aft cabin, together with a special switch and relay to put it on-line. And there is a small fan to ventilate the entire area, using a voltage-sensitive relay to run only when the batteries are being charged. Our battery charger is located under the settee on the port side.

Interesting how the same model of boat can come out of the factory with so many variations. Are these improvements made over the years of production or something else I wonder?
Note your engine raw water strainer is under the floor, ours is in the engine compartment!!

Hi Colin, When the batteries come up for renewal I will be moving the eng battery to be just forward of the engine under the cabin sole. and expanding the house battery set to use all four under the berth(s). Will try to post pics next week That’s very interesting. There is a lot of space there and I had never thought about moving the starting battery there. It will take an easy change of cable to get there but it’s probably closer to the battery switch than the standard location. Jason
