Hi All,
We have a SO 39DS and are now on our 4th acrylic cover on the fresh water filter attached to the fresh water pump (in 5 months). The pump is a Johnson 3.5, with rubber mountings. The filter cover simply splits in 2, the last time after just 2 weeks use and the pump not running at the time (we heard it go).
Has anyone else had a similar problem with the strainer and if so have they managed to solve it?
Regards

I'm guessing that water goes everywhere when the filter cover splits? I didn't even know we had a filter. I guess that means it is ok, but I suppose that one day I should change the filter?

Hi Trevor,
As the fliter is at the non pressurised side, the first indication is sometimes the pump running continuosly as it draws air rather than water. The result was a very slight drip as the acrylic cover only cracked. It was only on the latest break that the cover actually broke and came off, again though there was no leak as the pump draws water up from the tank.
Hope this makes sense.
Steve.

Hi Steve,
Yes that makes perfect sense and I can imagine how frustrating that must be. Maybe time for a new style of filter.
Regards,
Trevor

Had my cover break last week after a rough crossing. Same thing spilt and then takes air in and water out. Temporary fix with some gelcoat! I suspect the cover is not up to the job. I was told a complete new assembly is needed - did you manage to get just the cover?

Hi Grant,
We sourced the filter unit from Mack Engineering in Glasgow, it costs £15 including P&P and arrived next day. They commented that they had not heard of problems with it so it would be good if they had feedback that it's not a one off (or 3 in my case!). I've found that Arraldite works ok as a fix so I've kept the previous filters as spares.
Regards
Steve.
