zeilersforum.nl/media/kunena/attachments/4197/uitlaatbochtVP1.jpgI disconnected the elbow to inspect. After removing the black stuff I found it rusty at the inside. The rust is quite hard and difficult to remove. I want to remove it up to the blanc steel in order to see if I can expect holes in the cast iron. Has anybody experience in removing this rust?

This seems to be a casted stainless version instead welded: anyone experience with the casted version?

Vasko your proposed elbow costs approx. 230 € but do not forget it is located in the US. Customs duties should be added to EU imports.

yes - agree - when I got it about 2 years ago - I've calculated the total cost to £146 according to my notes - but agree seems a lot more expensive currently !

I bought the welded version from Keypart last year (£235 incl. gasket). The cast one looks a lot nicer. The one parts4engines sells in the UK is cast, it looks exactly the same as the EBay one in the US. At current exchange rates if you get away without paying import duty then the US one is marginally cheaper including delivery.

In the netherlands on Zeilersforum there is some discussion ongoing about the risk of using stainless steel 304 or 316 for the elbow, as it might behave even worse in salt water than the original.
So I'm interested to hear if anyone has experience during several in having used stainless steel version.

As previously said just replace however....its a bugger of a job to get it sealed correctly take great care of the gasket and do not bother refitting the electrical control box fully until you are happy there are no leaks when at operating temperature, took me quite a while especially as the bolts are so awkward to get to

And then I will decide to replace it or not. Anyway, it is my intention not to refit the electrical control box to the engine, but to fix it against the wooden case besides the engine. Wiring has just enough length for that.

Replace the exhaust elbow with an SS - YES or NO? VP MD20XX has no zinc protectors and according to some theory this elbow is supposed to act as a sacrificial anode. Probably the situation is the same on Yanmar, which has a heat exchanger - it has no zinc protectors. I follow the channel on Youtube "Sail Life" and replaced the elbow with a rostfrei without any doubts (and many others). Does any of the seafarers have any experience related to this topic? Any discussion, opinion or experience is very welcome. :-) :-) :-)
