I realize that this is like raising a question regarding motor oil on the auto enthusiast forums, but ...
Does anyone have an opinion on the use of Sikkens Cetol, based on actual use on the cockpit seats and stern swim platform of 4-9 year old Jeanneau?
I have badly peeling varnish on the swim platform and will need to do something about that once the snow melts for the last time and the outdoor temp becomes reasonable. I'm considering taking the varnish off and using Cetol Natural Teak instead.

A distributor for A-Glaze on this side of the "pond" is not immediately apparent, however, a friend of mine uses Semco for his fishing boat on Chesapeake Bay and swears by it (though only in his second season with it).

Guys
The A-Glaze product is also Semco.
With the INTERNET you can order on line and they will send it to you.
I have used their products for the last 4 years and I only polish the boat at the start of the season.
The teak cleanser is very good and I use it about twice a year on heavy traffic (cockpit floor) areas. The swim platform only ever needs a wash with fresh water and a wipe over....I thought the idea was to go sailing not polish the boat.
They are very approachable and will always talk as well.
Good Luck.

Geoff. ;D Hi Geoff I think our boat should arrive a week or so after yours at Burnham Would like to compare notes with your thinking on both the teak and GRP sealant treatments. IE DIY v Yard etc Counting the days...... Malcolm

Karl,
Back to the teak finish question- I've been using Cetol light for about 2.5 yrs now and would tell you that it's performance in my opinion, is average. I recoat about every 3-4 months but still find the edges failing despite my efforts to catch and fix these as they occur. The coating itself beads and repels water great for about 2 months and then it starts to get the dark spots indicating you've got to recoat.
Guess it's better than varnishing, but not maintenance-free. I think there are better options and will switch over after seeing how other boats with alternative coatings fare.
Regards, John

Guys I will be using the A-Glaze product. This is a 2 part product with cleaner and the second bit being sealer. I will let the forum know how I get on with it later in the year. Geoff.

I've been using Semco on my cockpit floor and seats since the boat was new. It works well, and needs to be redone a couple of times per year. The 2 part cleaner is very effective, and brings the teak back to the golden colour and then the sealer keeps it that way (for a while).
I varnished the coachroof handrails and the rails on either side of the hatch, and find that these need annual maintenance, but they make the boat look really good.
