In my experience you really need bow thrusters from 43ft and over. The 40 should be easily handled without, even if having a bow thruster installed really changes your life, especially if you single-hand the boat!!
The 40 is a really good boat, you'll love it!

Keebs, keep waiting! I know your feeling 'cause I waited my "Roi Dagobert" for ten long, endless months. Now launching!
Bye

Brian, think that a Vetus or Volvo will do the job, as they would do in any other area.. ;D. Easy to find, easy spare parts if needed. Be aware on installation: you have to mount the thruster as deep s you can, and as far from the keel as you can (the "bowest" the better). Briefly, you have to find the right spot balancing those factors. Go on: it will change your life. Should you need any info about croatian cruising, pls contact me. Bye

We have used a SO 49 in Greece and found that a bow thruster would have made Med Mooring much easier. Took a few days to get the hang of it; but the SO 49 tracked pretty well in reverse.
When I bring our SO 49 back to the states from the BVI; first thing I do is to install a bow thruster, most of the time we sail just the 2 of us.

Brian, we are moored in Craotia too. We have a Sleipner (www.side-power.com) bow thruster which we ordered with the boat and was installed by Jeanneau. As most of the time we are only two on board (43DS) and although we don't us it excessively, we would not do without it. Peter

I just retrofitted a "Side Thruster" on my SO 45.2. Best thing I ever did. It takes the stress out of tight marinas. Kevin

I had them one time on a 52' Oceanstar charter in Greece & thought they were the best thing I ever had on a boat. But this June I chartered a 40' Jeanneau in Guadeloupe / Dominica & was impressed on how well the boat handled in tight spaces especially in reverse @ the base where I had to "med moor" upon return plus picking up water from comm'l dock in Dominica......56 hp engine with good torque & little prop walk really helps..........should not need on a 40' but if you need them for your sailing areas & peace of mind = You make the call.
