I have always been apprehensive of gas in boats, my Father made us use Kerosene/Paraffin units for years, but it is so much more convenient to just turn a tap on...........
Last night our normal Friday night arrival at Serendib, might have been more dramatic than intended, I turned on the gas cylinder in the gas locker and went below . A few minutes later I thought -" those bilges small a bit musty" - lifting the sole board and realised it was gas - Eileen - had just lit some table candles as well....Blew them out and flew out of the cabin, opened the stern locker and shut the gas off at the bottle. There was quite a strong smell in the locker, despite the gas locker being sealed to drain overboard
Fortunately there was a real gale blowing so with all hatches opened the gas dissipated quite quickly
I investigated this morning, in the light of day and found it was the Camping Gaz regulator that I fitted about 4 years ago (replacing the original and different type fitted by Jeanneau as OEM) that was venting from a very small hole (see pictures at: www.jeanneau-owners.com/hintsandtips/gassafety.html)
Bought new regulator and now no problem, touch wood - I will be sending the regulator back to Camping Gaz for testing, to me it seems bizarre that there is not a failsafe mode to stop all gas if there is a fault.
Based on advice from a PBO article that I have included on the above link I have just ordered a 2 head waterproof gas detector www.nereusalarms.co.uk/html/boat_gas_alarms.html as well as a portable handle held unit. www.sfdetection.com/productpage.asp?pageid=48&areaid=2
Another job worth double checking this winter
