Folks, It's that time of year again where I need to renew my yacht insurance. Has anyone used Saga Boat Insurance (over 50's only)? I have a quote which looks really good for our 45DS of £586 and covers all the usual areas. Anybod any thoughts?

Seems reasonable to me. I pay 440 euros for a 1999 SO40. The whole Western Med up to the canaries. Taken the higher value of your 45DS, GBP 586 seems very reasonable. Price is one thing, but presenting a claim and actually getting paid out correctly, that´s another thing. I have no idea how good SAGA is. But they are only the insurance brokers anyway I assume? I am over 50...... and since two days a grandfather! Maybe I should start thinking of 50+ benefits in earnest now! LOL........(and start playing golf).

I have used Saga for home, car and camper insurance, all seem good - no claims experience though, but call centre is good.
Worth giving Topsail a call as well they give 10% off for all Jeanneau Owners and will try very hard to beat any quote, I have used them for past 5 seasons or so and seem good - they know about boats, but again haven't claimed.
I got a good quote from yachting 24 for my renewal in March - which gives total EU coverage, they are part of Pantaneus, so great reputation, but the small print does show it is a no frills service - all on line, no telephone support etc . Quite a large excess from memory and I think they will only insure up to £100k so probably too low for you...

vasko : Happy because they are cheap and cheerful, or happy as they paid out your claims quickly and without to much fuzz??

I am from Israel, very low competition in the marine insurance business, SO 40 2005 I insure for 100k$ value and pay 0.975% of that for one year. Good service though and quick payment if something happens reasonable access. How down should we push those prizes ?

And forgot to tell,: Insurance includes the whole MED. including the Adriatic and black sea.

I use pantaneus and pay around £1100 for £230k, and all Med including Canarias and Cape Verde , however it does include legal insurance, and Bartons the marine lawyers have recovered nearly 4K from a supplier that did substandard work on the boat, it cost me nothing but time, so I guess I am happy.

Onyva, please elaborate on the name of your insurance. Is that own risk , casco etc. ? PS: was just trown out of Unigarant because they decided to only focus on the Dutch market. Goodbuy Belgium and Germany for them . I was a good customer though , no claims the last 8 years , next to the theft of two windgenerators some years ago. Which was not my wrong doing I'm still looking for an alternative and my Dutch brooker DMW offered me Panteanius , is that ok or should I cut the middleman and contact Panteanius directly ? Or maybe look for another ? My premium is about 850 Euro , Casco and 150 Euro deductible. Maybe it is also important to speak about deductible charges. Regards

But I suppose that is adaptable no ? would love to hear/read other possibilities . Regards

Sailbleu, the insurance companies want to limit their area of liability. We are quoted for European waters not north of 60 degrees north, not south of 36 degrees north, not east of 10 degrees east, not west of 15 degrees west, but excluding Mediterranean waters.
I have discussed this in the past with them and now at renewal time. We have a quote today with cover across Biscay and the Iberian Atlantic coast but no Med at all. I'm not going to worry about this as once I get to Gibraltar I'll call the insurer and get this changed. This time around I was remind about all the issues in the Eastern Med – war and immigrants. So we’re at £653 for £125,000 hull and machinery with £350 excess; dinghy, outboard and personal effects (£3650) excess is £100. This was with a 20% NCB discount.
We worked through Maxine a broker at Abbeygate Insure in Malaga. She does understand yacht insurance and was very attentive.

sailblue : yes, that is easily changed. They just cut the Med in half sort of thing. I just don´t need it, as I don´t go that way. But, as I mentioned before: price is one thing, claiming and actually getting paid another. I read about low prices and friendly brokers (one lady broker even understanding yacht insurance ) , but who here actually made some substantial claims and actually got properly dealt with and paid? As paperwork and selling you stuff is the easy part. I have not made any claim myself ever, but I had several yachts covered by Allianz (Gallagher Heath of Liverpool) in my charter days. They always paid up correctly. The highest claim I dealt with was 48.000 euros on storm damage on a Beneteau 50. I consider this a good size claim. After the surveyor confirmed the repairs and amounts, no problems at all with the settlement. Allianz paid the boat yard directly, so no pre-financing for the owner. Another of my clients, who moved his boat (Jeanneau SO49) back to England in 2014 and put it in storage, got paid the full insured amount by Pantaenius, after the whole boat went up in flames. Pantaenius even wrote them afterwards that they were very sorry he lost his boat and hoped that in case he would buy a new boat, he would come back to them. Now that I call good service!! And this is what counts in the end. Not low premiums or friendly brokers.

By the way, I did ask a quote from Topsailinsurance, mentioning I am a member of this forum (as recommended by Malcolm) and their pricing is also pretty good. It is worth contacting them too.

But, as I mentioned before: price is one thing, claiming and actually getting paid another. That's why we have the FCA.

Jessabbe is insured through pantaneus in Sweden for something like €700 I've now deregistered her from Sweden and just need to do the markings on her to complete the Australian registration I need to call pantaneus to find out if I must cancel my current insurance or if they will just issue me with new paperwork.

So apparently Pantaenius is not such a bad choise. I take it that I can always change the cruising area by just calling them , well my brooker that is , and see if they raise the premiun or add a supplemental cost to it . I'm having trouble with the 1500 Euro deductibility though , today it's 350 which I think is high enough already. Maybe I can take that up with my brooker.
Regards
EDIT: earlier I mentioned 150 Euro deductible , I've checked the numbers and it's 350 .Not that it matters alot.

My coverage originally did not include Turkey. I called them and they added it at no extra cost.

We just got our annual bill from IMIS - as you know we are full time liveaboards and have full Med and 90% of the Black Sea. We have hull value of $125usd and liability of $500USD. Insurance covers dink and stuff on board. It was for $2,000USD.
They allowed us to do a 2 handed Atlantic crossing and when we want to do something special, like outside the normal area they work with us on a premium for the area and time we will be there. Very easy company to work with.
