I know having a printer on board seems a strange thing, but it's something I want to get now that I will be living on board. I want it for things like printing boarding passes for when I fly back to Sweden for quick visits, crew lists and anything else. Until recently I have struggled to find a printer that met my needs, compact, battery powered, wireless printing from iOS devices. But thankfully lat last year I found that Epson released the perfect printer www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/jsp/Landing/workforce-100-wireless-mobile-portable-printer.doMaybe I am crazy, ok yes I am Anyone else ever thought a printer could be handy?

Not crazy when you need to print or scan documents for customs & immigration. We have a HP ENVY 5530 e-All-in-One Printer on board which can wifi link to iPhone & iPad also.

Not crazy at all. We already have one on the list for when we head south in coming months, BUT I am planning to also get one with a scan facility - understand that often extra copies of boat docs are useful and also can digitize receipts etc

I figure that the scan one are too bulky and if I need to "scan" I'll just take a photo with my phone. Last time onboard I had made hand written notes on things to do, buy & measurements on normal a4 sized paper. Incase I misplaced them I too photos of each page and they came out quite good and would be easy to print if I wanted a "photocopy" With the WF-100 I should be able to make the "photocopy" quite simply with it and the phone

Nice to know that this is not a reason I am crazy. One less reason from my massive list

That is much smaller than my HP OJ 4500 I have at home, but still 4 times the size of the Epson. As usual, that means the Epson will be 4 times the price

I don't think it is crazy at all. My wife was a bit reluctant when I wanted to bring along our HP all-in-one on our first trip to Scotland, but we needed it to deal with problems back in the US with a financial company and house insurance. It was really useful to be able to print out and scan documents, or especially to make copies of documents for officials and marinas. It doesn't take up much space (at least on our 43DS), and when you need the capability, you really need it. No hesitation about bringing it along the second time, where it was incredibly useful printing out docs to get the autopilot sent off to be repaired. If you have the space to store it and the AC power, for any long trip it is worth it.
Phones are getting really good at being useful, but they can't do everything, yet, and not everyone accepts electronic documents, yet. I tried to use my phone as a scanner, and it sort-of works, but not really very well. Sometimes, you need hard copies, and if you decide you want this capability, it makes sense to bundle that into an all-in-one printer/scanner.

I just did an experiment. I printed of a document I photographed and then scanned and printed the same. The photo was useless as it look like a photo. I then downloaded an app called "CamScanner" and tried again. It was a huge improvement over the the original, whilst not as good as the scan, it was getting close. A lot of the problem it wad was related to the fact that the original had been creased a lot.
I'll probably still go down the compact printer route as I suspect space will be a premium when I am on board full time ;-)

Your experience with CamScanner matches mine. It's not as good as a scanner, but it's there in your pocket when you need it.
Another improvement of any scanner generating a PDF file rather than a simple photo is that the Adobe reader now lets you "fill out" a form. You can add text, a signature, check boxes, and what have you. So once you scan your document, you can modify the PDF file before printing it out. Or if possible, you can just send the modified file electronically, if the recipient is willing to accept it.

I have a similar issue I will need printer on board to print my boarding passes from Perpignian to London as RyanAir do not allow mobile checking for Perpignian and the check-in is open 3 days before the flight only.. in brief I need a printer who will be used very rarely and need take as little as possible space and be cheap.. working on 220 is not a issue as I will print the boarding passes when I'm at my berth , and it needs to be thermal ( expensive) or laser as the inkjet is not practical when left for long periods and the ink's dry - e.g. I may need to open a new ink for every printing which is not acceptable my current view is : RICOH SP100e

Brother PocketJet 6 - is the smallest printer on the market and if you are happy with the initial price - this is a great porinter I looked at them a couple of years ago when I first thought about printers. Nasty pricing and inconvenience of only thermal paper. There are also several versions of it with different connection options and none of them (wifi/bT) support Apple's AirPrint which don't necessarily mean it wont work, but you will have to screw around trying to get it working

That's an ancient printer www.itreviews.com/pentax-pocketjet-ii/And based on the looks and naming, it's probably the great, great, great grandfather of the Brother PocketJet 6 Might be an issue to get drivers to get it working. Like taking a trip down memory lane Operating Systems Supported: Windows 95 (IRDA only), 98, Me, 2000, 2003, CE/CE.NET, XP, Symbian/EPOC, PocketPC/Windows Mobile, PalmOS, Linux, and Mac OSX. The problem is the word "jet" meaning you will need to buy new cartridges every-time you need to print as the old one will be gone because of the long time not in use between the prints - if you have space just get a laser one.. ( I'm quite limited on space myself..)

Hoppy Do like the look of the little Epsom for its compactness plus the USB charging and battery operation but the inbuilt battery will add to price. We have HP3520e on board. Wireless inkjet and interfaces with our iPads, iPhone, MacBook and Dell. Prints, scans and photocopies. Cheep purchase price under $100. Consumables (ink) readily available ANYWHERE. Don't like to stock up too much because if it fails we'll ditch it and don't want to be stuck with a pile of cartridges! For the cost of new, it is not worth cost of repair (I so hate to say that). We have been loving aboard for 14 months and a printer/scanner is essential. Capacity for professional, properly aligned document production is necessary. Photos a bit ham fisted IMHO.

I ended up buying the WF-100 and took it down to the boat on my last visit. Nice compact size and works well. As I happened to have some photo paper I tested printing a photo but it was not so good, but that was never what I bought it for. I configured it to connect to the wifi created by the router for my wavewifi long range wifi so I can print whilst I surf, so a bit like home Epson supplied an app with the printer. I can either use the app or Apples airprint from my iphone/ipad. The app also includes a "scan" function which does a pretty good job of converting a photo into a scan like image. If the original paper is flat and you do the lighting right, then it looks pretty close to a flatbed scan. It even corrects the shape of the document if you have shot from an angle rather than directly above. Paper with folds and creases don't work so well, but you cant have everything

WF-100 looks good except it is a inkjet - e.g. I'm really fed-up with drying inks... and every-time I need to print need to buy new inks..

it is general inkjet issue if you do not print at least one page per week the inks dry - if you usage is 10 pages and one month nothing then again 10 pages inkjets are not good at all - that is why i'm thinking about thermal or laser printe
