Hi,
I'm new to the forum as I have never owned a Jeanneau before but looking at buying one now and I need some advice please.
We are considering a Prestige 36 and have viewed several with different engines. We have seen a 2006 model with D4 260hp engines but I am concerned that these are a little underpowered and we should aim for the d4 300hp although the only ones around at the moment are probably a little over budget.
Does anyone have any stats showing the performance of the two engines or experience with either that could help me?
Thanks in advance.
Joe

Hi,
We have a 36 fitted with the volvo 285hp kamd300 engines. These give adequate performance at 2800rpm which equates to around 18 knots cruise. At this engine speed the power produced is way under the 260hp you are considering and the fuel consumption is around half of what it would be if opened up to max revs of 3800. Max continuous rpm rated at 3400 which although gives an extra 7 - 8 knots also increases fuel consumption considerably. Bear in mind that the rated power only comes in a peak revs and when cruising on the plane the power absorbed will be a lot less than that required to put it there in the first place. These hulls will plane at around 12 knots (depending on load carried) and up to around 14 knots when fully laden. By fully laden I mean full fuel tanks, water tanks and say 4 people. In my view the engines you have mentioned will give a similar performance to the kamd300 version with the added advantage of slightly better fuel consumption.
A second point is that the physically bigger d4 engines make it much more difficult to gain access for regular maintenance. The engines are a snug fit anyway (not a major problem) and can cause a few grazed knuckles.
Hope this helps.

Hi Napoleon,
Thanks for replying.
I have been doing a bit more research and believe that the effective use of power in the D4 260hp is very similar to the KAMD300 with the advantage (as you mention) of improved fuel consumption.
So I have been told, I should expect to cruise comfortably at around 20knts with a top end of around 27 - both of which suit me fine.
You mention that the D4 engine is bigger but this is not the case as I believe it is a 4 cylinder block compared to the KAMD 6 cylinder and looking at boats with both options, the D4 definitely gives a bit more working space (although not enough to be comfy!).
Whilst I think the D4 300hp will provide that little extra power I would prefer, they seem to be +/- £10k more which for a couple of knots on the top speed is probably not worth paying for (in my view).
Thanks again.

Hi Joe, just bought a P36 recently with twin D4 260's. I brought it from Dublin to Cork, which took about 10 hours. I was travelling at 2500 rpm, which gave me about 15 knots most of the way, and a bit faster in places where the tide was with us. But with no tide, we fairly much maintained 15 knots. This was with 3 adults on board, and both water tanks full.
I filled the tanks before departure, and haven't refuelled yet, but I suspect that we used about 30 L / hr, per engine, so 60 L /hr in total. I'll be filling it again in the next few days, so I'll know how much she used, and I'll let you know.
regards, Tim

Thanks again. Joe Hi Joe, Sorry for my error - you are quite right of course the d4 is not quite as big. What I meant to say was that the width is about the same (within an inch) and it still makes it a bit tight to reach certain bits. Having said that I have had no major problems but only a few grazed knuckles. Well worth the effort! Napoleon
