I want to move the traveler from the cockpit of my 2006 40.3 Sun Fast and thereby open up the cockpit. I've asked Jeanneau if I can go to a German main system but they say no. I have also asked a boat engineer and he says "no" since the forces generated by the Sun Fast rig are much greater than the ones generated by a Sun Oddessy. What to do? I'm thinking of mounting a Targa bar (I have to in any case since I will be Blue Water Cruising) and mounting the traveler on that. Any other suggestions?

If you want to move the mainsheet from the end of the boom to the centre you will need a new boom. There are a lot of cruising yachts that do not have a traveler so for the cost of a new boom you could free up the cockpit. Regards David

I would go to Z-spar or USSpar if that is who made your rig, might be someone else......look and see what boom the SO vs the SF has. If the same, you should be able to do as you wish. If the SF is smaller, then you may have an issue. The spar manufacture would probably be a better person to talk with. If it were me, having sailed with cabin top and cockpit travelers, I would keep the cockpit one, as the person steering etc, as access to it. A german now that I am thinking about, does have the sheet in the cockpit with access by helmsman.
Harken or Lewmar may be other options, as they will more than likely supply you with the parts etc.
I also know of a local first 35s5 that has kept the cockpit traveller when racing, which is not usable with a dodger, so they also have a cabin top setup for when cruising.

I was seriously looking at a SF40 and even made an offer on one, nice boats but the cockpit traveler bothered me too. It seemed to me an arch was workable solution if you don't mind looking like a Hunter. It would stress the boom vang so I would want to check on the increased forces there to see if the boom would take it.

I met a lady in Croatia a few yeas ago. She fitted a coachroof traveller and a sun odyssey mainsail and boom for cruising going back to the sunfast main and cockpit traveller for racing

Why don't you sell the yacht to me - I prefer exactly what you have - and go for a Sun Odyssey for Blue Water Cruising! /Johan pjstromback@gmail.com

Now the traveler - Is there any reason not to mount the new style double line to the coach roof (with plates underneath). This will let me control the boom as if I had a traveler from the cockpit.
