Hello All, Having been used to a single wheel for ten years I now have a S.O.40.3 with twin wheels. The wheels seem rather stiff and 'creaky' compared to what I had been used to in the past.Is this normal ? I have tried to inspect the system to ensure it is adequately greased but having difficulty locating a suitable 'inspection hatch'. Any advice or comments out there would be appreciated. Regards to all, Norman.

Creaky - possibly - certainly my wheels squeak just like the 34.2 did. Stiff - no - they shouldn't be any harder to use than a single wheel. I suggest you see if you can try another boat or ask at the yard for another opinion. You can gain access from within the lazerette and also the aft cabin will have access points to inspect the below decks cables and rudder. Cheers, Grant

You can inspect the steering in a number of places. 1, remove the compass and gain some access to the sprocket and chain, 2 remove the wood back panels in the cockpit locker to gain access to the cables and blocks, 3 remove the head panel in the aft cabin for further access. It is worth removing the compass's as there was a design fault in the SO40 which allowed the sprocket which drives the chain to slide off its key and totally disengage the steering. The problem was solvable by putting a jubilee clip each side of the sprocket to ensure that it did not move. I don't know if Jeanneau have resolved the issue in later boats but I know of at least 3 SO40, including my own, where the sprocket disengaged with a loss of steering on that wheel. Do a search on this site for possible info. Good sailing Adrian
