Do any members in the Preveza/Ionian area know of good companies to do the standing rigging replacement on my J43ds? She is ashore at the Cleopatra yard so I know their costs but am interested in other places and approx prices. I understand the price of s/s went up a lot last year with the Ukrainian war and post-covid economics. I have also wondered if it is worth it do have the mast taken down, remove everything myself, bring back to the UK and have new rig made up to take back out...? I guess VAT might be a complication since in the UK it is 20% and in Greece it is 24%. Any advice welcome!

Rob, I have a 2004 43ds and had the standing rigging changed in 2016 before i left the UK for a trip to the Adriatic. I could look up the price i paid if you like but so many costs have increased that possibly the figure i paid is irrelevant. What was interesting was that they did it with the mast up. Work was done by Allspars, Hamble and i know they gave a quote to a friend of mine with his boat in Italy based on flying out 2 guys and the new rigging. I don't know enough about Preveza to comment on yr possibilities locally but the marina where i keep my boat is extremely competent (Ranieri/Bari) and not very far from you and would certainly be my choice if i had to have the work done again in a few years. (VAT in Italy is 22%)

Hi Rob, If, when entering Greece you are stopped you might be liable to customs duties and the Greek VAT regardless of having paid UK VAT on your standing rigging. Since Brexit the rules have changed and UK VAT is not relevant in the EU as we are now classed as a third Country. The new rules are very complicated, you could ask your UK supplier for a price including exporting to Greece with VAT and customs duty costs. Alternatively, If you are driving over you could just take a chance and not declare the items, but that would be illegal. I think you will probably find it is cheaper to use a Greek supplier.

We replaced our SO43DS rigging in 2016. Took mast down, we fitted new Raymarine radar, added LED tri-light and deck light, added a camera and high power LED spot light covering foredeck and 6m in front of bow for dark bows to or mooring bouy, fitted new horn. Also able to check spreaders and clean / polish mast. Check waste right seal at mast base. Do the work in Greece, don't get mixed up in Greek customs with VAT.

Rob, an extra comment from me. If you are exporting anything from the UK (new standing rigging for example) you simply have to ask the supplier NOT to charge you with UK VAT. As simple as that. Then at any EU destination you will need to pay customs for the applicable local VAT. It appears that this might be a bit of a headache w Greek customs but I do it quite regularly for items from UK into Italy.
