Before I start tearing the engine insulation away, does anyone happen to know how the laminated companionway steps are attached to the hinged FRP companionway? Thanks in advance.

I have not seen the screws, but would not be surprised to find that they are underneath the sound insulation. At this point I have lost almost all of the thin, shiny black layer on the insulation, but the underlying material is in surprisingly good shape. You might want to do an experimental excavation for one step, and try to cut a block of foam above and below the heaght where the step is. I don't have any suggestions for releasing it from the back of the steps, but if you do a good cut it should be easy to put it back in place.
One other suggestion - the steps can easily be removed and laid down inside the main cabin. Just pull the two pins at the bottom and lift. If you haven't done it before, having someone else to help can avoid scratches to the walls as you rotate the steps and set them down. A large piece of carpet would be advised to protect the floor. Experience....
Let us know what you find.
