The saloon deck panels in our 2000 SO40 are looking their age and need restoration. What have other owners used on theirs?

Hi, I'm looking to do the same on my SO 34.2.
The saloon floor is very squeaky, and a few panels are warped, so investigating ways to restore.
Will monitor this thread and post back when I have some ideas...
Cheers Dave

One of the truly great things about these boats is that the entire cabin sole can all be lifted out of the boat. Not so in my previous boats.
I expect the teak and holly veneer is very thin so sanding will probably make it worse. You should be able to cover it with new teak/holly veneer (1/16" thick from Oakwood Veneers) or one of the many vinyl products. You might consider losing the holly stripe for a more modern look. I expect the newer boats are vinyl.

It may be worth experimenting with some paint stripper / varnish remover, the board veneer will be treated to a surface finish which, if it hasn’t worn through completely, will be holding the dirt. If that doesn’t work , sanding with caution would be my next option, if the board is looking horrible you have nothing to lose having a go.
Renewing the veneers, you will not get a maximum yield from a holly striped sheet , as to make it look good you need to get the holly stripes to line up, sounds petty, but you will need more than you think. Going non holly stripe is easier, the aesthetic just a personal choice, sticking the veneer down will never produce quite the quality and durability of a factory laminated board as they use powerful press machines. 8 x 4 sheets of pre laminated boards are available.
Last resort, a nice floral design carpet

A bit of an upgrade to floral carpet, do take photos and report back now and again regarding durability. It’s always interesting to see how well these things last, Lino in my bathroom is now 18 years old and looks more or less the same as when I put it on the floor. (… but not holly stripe teak effect) perhaps Lino is the future. CB
