Greetings to all
I have a 36i 2008 which is under major refit yard have pointed out hairline cracks near chainplates that could be minor surface or something more serious.
The question is & can anyone advise please : Chainplates are backed by a stainless bar that is bonded in/onto a lump of solid glass - is this just glass or does it house and cover more stainless that takes & spreads the load ?
We suspect the latter but without grinding out the solid glass rectangle/ cant know for sure.
Many thanks as always

I just had a chainplate replaced on my 39i because the old one was damaged by my neighbor's boat breaking loose in a storm. The guys that did it made no mention of anything being encapsulated in the glass. It was simply through bolted with a backing plate. They probably built the glass up in the area to add strength. I would be really surprised if they encapsulated steel inside the glass. Other manufacturers like Pacific Seacraft tried that back in the '80s with disastrous long term results.
Have you got pics of the cracks? I suspect they are likely just cracks in the gelcoat.

Oh I thought you were talking about your upper shroud chain plate.
I don't know what the structure of the lower connection point is, but it is pretty beefy. I would be surprised if the cracks were anything serious, but I don't know for sure.

Zaphod the 39i has a chain plate mounted externally on the hull whereas the 36i has a chain plate mounted internally and comprises a large mounding as seen in Choppo's picture. Sorry Choppo I have no advice to give but this has prompted me to check the assembly on my boat, hidden behind cushions and easy to ignore.

That is the lower shroud attachment point on the 39i. Do both the upper AND lower attach there on the 36i?

Hi Zaphod, Upper and lower shrounds attach to an oval lump of stainless steel on the deck. This is connected through the deck to the block shown in Choppo's picture with a heavy rod. Sorry don't have a picture handy.
