Hi everyone
After some advice. Have a Merry Fisher 795 2019. It has two battery’s and shore power. The battery charger is making a ticking sound and only has one green light. It’s left on shore power in a marina.
The domestic battery I’m guessing is low as everything connected to the domestic battery appears to be struggling. When I run the tap in the sink all the ceiling lights come on. Bizarre!
When I start the engine the split charge relay is clicking in and out at tick over.
I’ve checked all battery connections and they look fine. Nothing loose no corrosion.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Regarding the tap - do the lights come at the same time that the water pump does, or do the lights come on before that? Are the ceiling lights on a switch or a relay or a dimmer?

Whenever I hear of really weird electrical problems, particularly when something comes on or gets brighter when a load is applied, I think it must be the grounds are not connected correctly. On my previous boat, I fixed a problem by putting a grounding strap between one ground connection at the engine where the fuel filter was mounted and another near the alternator. It turned out that the fuel filter mount had a significant resistance at the block.

I think it’s something to do with the split relay not charging domestic battery. Apparently if it gets too low the relay and charger can’t detect it. The lights come on as the pump turns on.
I was advised elsewhere to try jumping the domestic battery to the engine battery to try and put some charge in it with engine running When I do the relay stops clicking the lights and pump behave themselves.
the lights are standard jeanneau led lights. No dimmer or relay.

Wonder if you try this: disconnect the shore power shut down all batteries turn everything back on I have had a couple issues where rebooting the system seems to help.

Hello mrbrightside,
In the absence of any other information I would back Don’s general thoughts about the grounding system. I know on my boat the battery and ground isolators can develop a high resistance ( as they are very rarely operated). I’m not sure what type of isolators your boat has but if they were manually operated I would vigorously operate the ground isolator for a while to ensure it is low resistance.
If you would like to get a multimeter, you could check the ground side of the water pump compared to the negative terminal of the house battery. You may find the ground side of the pump develops a voltage when operated which normally it should not. Trace the ground back and see where it is disconnected from the negative terminal of the battery.
You could experiment and join the ground side of the pump to the negative terminal of the house battery with a wire and see if it fixes the problem. If it does fix the problem it gives you some incentive to keep looking for the disconnection between the two.
Good luck with it and let us know what you find.
Regards Trevor
