HI All, we have recently purchased a Tonic 23, the outboard motor needs replacing and we are struggling to find one that will fit in the outboard well. There is currently a 2002 Honda 5HP fitted, had anyone replaced their outboard engine if so what model etc. We are also considering going electric with epropulsion electric outboard. Many thanks Andy

Hi Andy, welcome to the forum and congratulations on your purchase. You will find many helpful people and lots of good information here, but it is looking like no one has led the way for you on the motor replacement.
My previous boats were trailer sailors, and I had several friends who had similar issues when they tried to replace the original motor. All the space is well used in a good design, and when the motor manufacturer demands a little more, all the available space has already been allocated. It takes a lot of searching through all the makes available, and possibly considering second hand. If the problem is only when tilting the motor, some have made brackets to hold a vertical track so the engine is lifted straight up.
When you are searching, you will find that often several different hp ratings from one manufacturer might have the same physical size, so you may find when you do find one that will fit, that you can get a bit more power, which I am guessing you might appreciate. Also, modern motors often have a “high reverse thrust” option, which uses clever propellor design to avoid the exhaust causing cavitation in reverse, and this you will definitely appreciate if you have not experienced it before.
If all else fails, you may be able to make a bracket on the stern work, and good solid brackets are readily available to accept suitable size motors.
The electric option is also interesting and some other brands have been recently come onto the market with electric as an option. But I don’t know about current cost and availability of suitable equipment.
Good luck in your search. Please come back and tell us all what you are able to find.

HI rene 460,
Many thanks for your reply and points etc we were looking at the electric option but cost circa £2400 is quite steep. Other option now is to go back to replacing the engine with a new 4 stroke with sail drive, that will give us more torque. Only thing to do now though is to modify the outboard well. Think we will have to alter the inboard side panel, and maybe cut some of the inner leaf from the transom to fit the outboard. Will keep you posted etc.
