Has anyone removed the companionway steps like these (on our 2000 SO40) for refinishing? It is not clear to me whether they are attached using screws from underneath the molded fiberglass surface or from above, underneath the traction strips.

I have never seen any telltale signs of fasteners underneath the nonslip strips on top of the steps. This leads me to believe that they’re fastened from underneath, which would make more sense structurally. Of course to find out, you would have to remove the insulation underneath the steps, which is why I’ve never done it. I don’t want to have to get involved in refastening the insulation.

Sorry, I don't know the answer either, but I've been thinking of refinishing the steps on my SO 36i as well, and finishing with some non-skid varnish skipping the installation of the non-skid strips. Let us know how you get on with this please!

I couldn’t find how to remove mine, I presumed they were glassed in. I double taped off and sanded down and revarnished in situ. (Used the fore hatch for escape). Best wishes. Michael Solano. S/Y Julia Too. Marmaris Turkey. P.S. I will be on the boat tomorrow. If you want any further info.

Don, hesitation at removing and restoring all that insulation is exactly why I asked the question. Michael, I have completely removed the hatch/step assembly before, so, if I refinish-in-place, I'll take the assembly out of the companionway and use a short ladder for temporary ingress/egress. What I don't like about doing that is the dust that will spread around the saloon.

Yes, My plan was to take the stair/companionway assemble out of the boat and refinish the steps in my garage thus avoiding dust buildup inside the boat. Thanks!

My 85 steps the screws etc were hidden under and behind. Found it easier to do as some of you are thinking, took it home, sanded, varnished, then I put some ,"Kiwi Grip" down for non skid. I made this area a bit bigger than the 2" tape strip I had. Works better too.

What color Kiwigrip did you use? This sounds like a good idea. Any pictures?

I used white. It did show up visibly better than the black strip. BUT being white, it shows dirt better! Another positive to Kiwi Grip, it dot does seem stickier than the basic tape strip. I also made the finish on the rougher side per directions.

Has anyone removed the companionway steps like these (on our 2000 SO40) for refinishing? It is not clear to me whether they are attached using screws from underneath the molded fiberglass surface or from above, underneath the traction strips. My 39i has the same steps. I replaced the grip strips and there was nothing underneath them. I suspect there are screws underneath the insulation on the back side.
