After the refit has finally finished I'm now underway and heading towards St. Martin. I started at noon today in Annapolis and am now anchored in Solomon's Island and tomorrow I head out of the Chesapeake and towards St. Martin. Anyone interested can follow me on SPOT tracking

Have a safe trip. You lucked out with amazingly mild weather in the Chesapeake to start your trip. Steve

Safe travels. I think I saw your boat in Annapolis while looking at one across from yours. Beautiful boat. I should have stopped to talk. I am solo as well and shopping at the moment.

Very cool! Have a safe trip my friend. I would like to do the same trip but don't know if I am experienced enough! Thinking of keeping my boat in Chestertown, Maryland and just renting a bareboat in the Caribbean... Thinking of maybe using Click&Boat - has anyone ever used their services? I heard it was pretty good, and that they have a couple Jeanneaus to rent but it would be nice to hear from others. thanks

I am waiting on a weather window in Norfolk right now and this morning it is very cold, the reverse-heat-pump heaters on the boat aren't up to the task and I'm bundled up and wish I could wear gloves while typing I haven't used the Click & Boat website but it would seem to be a possibility to charter and cut out the middlemen.

Insurance is the main issue with chartering from private Individuals.

After having spent a week waiting for better sailing weather in Norfolk, VA at the docks of the Norfolk Yacht and Country Club at the kind invitation of another forum member it is finally time to continue. There's a small weather window which will have me avoid gales and storms, but it will still be heavy-weather for part of the way. I leave in 2 hours on the rising tide and I'll fire up the SPOT tracker again should anyone wish to look at the tracks.

Marine Traffic is also doing a good job tracking your AIS.

Watching your track, hope you don't need your heat pump anymore ;-)

Looks like winds are gusting 65 knots where you are, hope boat is holding up good!

Looks like Zanshin landed at Frenchman's Cay, Tortola (BVI) about an hour ago. Hope it was a good trip.

Hello from Soper's Hole in the BVI. The trip was a mixed one, 2 bigger storms, each with their minor fiasco; but the majority was very good with 2 days of perfect sailing with flat seas, 10 knots true and 15 apparent while doing 8 knots. 2 days of motoring at the end (which is good, otherwise I would have had to beat into the tradewinds).
The weather routing by Chris Parker was very good. Everyone always says that you need to get east as soon as possible before heading south, because the further south you are the stronger the headwinds will be. Often you sail east to Bermuda and only then head south. This trip the weather patterns were different and Chris kept on saying "get as far south as you can and by the time you get there the fronts will have suppressed the trades and you can make easting". And that is what happened.
The first storm I tripped and bruised a rib.
The second one was bad, not because of the weather - I had 3 reefs in both sails and was comfortably zipping along at 8-9 knots. But I went below and due to the the first injury I couldn't hold on in the companionway and fell heavily into the galley area, landing on my back. For 30 minutes I couldn't move for pain. The first day I crawled everywhere and luckily the weather abated and the autopilot held and my ship's medicine chest had analgesics to keep me going. After that things got better, but I'm writing this while waiting for a ride to the clinic downtown and X-Rays.
I'll post the details once I know the diagnosis.

Sorry to hear about the bruises and hope nothing is cracked. Well done indeed on such a good passage. Did you have a crew or were you solo?
Enjoy your arrival now despite the injuries
Malcolm

Hi Zanshin,
Glad to hear that you have arrived at your destination. It sounds like a bit of a rough trip. I hope the injuries are not too serious.
Wishing you a speedy recovery and smoother sailing from here on.
