When our Yamaha 150 engine is fully tilted up, the end of the shaft is still in the water slightly - is this normal or should it be completely clear of the water surface? Am having a 'difference of opinion' about it with my OH.......! Thanks

i had (and still do) a similar issue on my 895. The dealer did adjust the full trim amount on the engine and it helped but it is sill a bit in the water.
i think the only other fix is to raise the engine a notch ( i think i will live with it and put outdrive anti fowling paint on it.) i wished it would trim out completely as i have seen other boats (same model) with full trim out.

On my 895, the Yamaha 200's are in the water by roughly 5". I turn the helm to full port to keep from pushing on the tubes that connect to the engine (fuel lines... etc).

My question is winterizing the outboard, or at least freeze protection. We want to boat year round on the river. Several have stated that the engines drain sufficiently to avoid freeze damage, but others claim trimmed up engines catch water in the prop hub which can result in freeze damage. Made it through last winter without any noted damage... so figures crossed

Stern of my 795 is lower with full fuel tank but lower unit is still with only a couple of cm in the water. I can confirm that the Yamaha 200 prop hub drains well, as I tried to pour a cup of RV antifreeze in it last winter and it flowed right out. Some of the other outboards at my dock sit bottom tip of lower unit even lower in water than mine. I don't think there is any issue since all seem to drain OK and few have any significant fouling if used regularly.

There it is the answer to all boating problems...USE IT REGULARLY...
The voo doo out there in the blogosphere is interesting (trimming motors full down in the water in cold weather was one and then others recommend the opposite), but I think the freezing hazard is minimal in the Columbia river, and so is fouling. One run up to 26 kts and its basically cleaned off.

Am having a 'difference of opinion' about it with my OH.......! Thanks Evinrude 200, XL with 795 there is no shaft in the water when fully tilted. Yamaha and Suzuki's seem to touch the water, may be because of their shaft lenght and larger head. We also have the possibilty of pullling the rear seat to the front to make space for the fully tilted engine, but with Evinrude it is not needed at all. Hoping Evinrude shall not disappoint us in performance.

The latest generation of Evinrude two strokes 150 to 300 hp have completely redesigned the way the mother is attached to the boat and one of the improvements is that it swings up well clear of the water..well worth considering imo.
