The boat is now on the hard, and I did the annual engine service this weekend. Last year (first year for me with this boat) I skipped the impeller, but I removed it this year. The impeller I removed has 12 blades, but the impeller said to be intended for the Yanmar 3GM30F at the local chandler has 6 blades. Is it just different OEM brands? Does it matter?

My 3GM30F uses impellers with six blades. I wonder whether your water pump has been replaced. Does the cover of the pump face the engine, requiring removal of the pump in order to replace the impeller? If not, it’s probably not the original pump.

It faces the engine and requires removal of the pump. But the pump cover says "made in Sweden" which makes me wonder if it is the original pump. The original pump would have been Japanese I guess?
I will bring the old impeller to the chandler and see what replacements they have.

Get the make and model number off the pump and search the internet for information about what impeller it takes. Also, take the same information to the chandler when you go.

I actually have my old impeller and a new one in my hand at the moment (Yanmar 3GM30F)
Unless my counting is mega off, I have 6 blades on both.
It is the original Yanmar pump as far as I am aware (and is an original expensive Yanmar replacement impeller)

The pump looks exactly like this, which is supposed to be the original Yanmar part: www.pumpvendor.com/Yanmar_128397-42500.htmlIt makes me think the previous owner fitted a non-standard impeller, or that there have been different versions of it.

As I understand it the raw water pump is make by Johnson, it certainly is on my 3YM30. The front plate will have the pump model number stamped on it, plus maker details. My impeller has six blades.

I think my pump is also made by Johnson. The boat is wrapped up for the winter, so there's no way for me to check.

Had to look up Johnson. It is an old Swedish manufacturing company now owned by SPX Flow, HQ in Charlotte, North Carolina. Production has nowadays moved to Poland. That's globalisation...

It seems there are (at least) two versions of the Yanmar 3GM30F, the Japanese-assembled and the Netherlands-assembled mainly for the EU market. The latter is called 3GM30F-YEU, and has the letter "E" in the serial number. The YEU version has the Johnson raw water pump and a different impeller. Still seems to be 6 blades, so the impeller I had was probably not intended.

My former SO34.2 had the Johnson seawater pump with a 6-bladed impeller, original equipment, with its 3GM30F Yanmar diesel. I've never seen a 12-bladed impeller, on any boat with a 3GM30F, in the boatyards we've stored in over the winters.

I am done buying knock off parts for my sailboat. We had a 3gm30 on our beneteau and always bought Yanmar OEM parts. I used to buy off brand oil filters until I learned these can fail prematurely. These are relatively inexpensive parts that can be catastrophic if they fail, especially if far from home port!

The oil filter for the 3GM30 is the same as is used for many different car models from Ford, Honda, Kia, Hyundai, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru and Renault. So you can get in in any auto parts store. If you buy from a well known oil filter manufacturer such as Mann the quality will be identical to the Yanmar-branded filter. Maybe even literally identical since Yanmar does not make the filters, they source them from one of the big manufacturers.
