Having recently purchased our 2008 Jeanneau 45 DS, I've done lots of research, however, I need a little help with my next project. I am looking to add a generator and struggling with the dimensions of some of standard units (Onan, Northern Lights, Panda, etc...) and where to put it, how it will fit there, and be serviceable. I assumed most folks with a 45DS locate them between the 2 aft lazarettes in that open area accessible through the forward opening floor grid and/or aft via the lifting transom hatch. However, there is only 17" of height and most units with sound enclosures are more like 20-22" high. I see many 45 DS sailboats out there with gensets, but no idea how and where they are fitted. Some articles I've read seem to indicate there is a storage area beneath that interior deck i just mentioned, which I believe there is, but cant fathom the idea of how it would ever get through any openings to get down there. Any input on this topic would be very helpful.
Also, I look forward to being part of this forum. Thanks in advance.

Hey, welcome to the forum.
We have a 49DS, with a dedicated genset space just forward of the companionway steps. What I did to find a genset that would fit in the space was I started by going over ads on Yachtworld. When I found an ad with a generator listed, I sent an email to the listing broker and asked if he could let me know the brand used and any issues with the install. I did make it clear I wasn’t buying, but I found most brokers took a few moments to help. For us, it turned out to be a Northern Lights 5KW, without the sound shield. More than I need, but it’s hard to find smaller gensets these days.

Thats a great suggestion. I did similar research to see what gensets a 45DS would fit, but never thought of emailing the broker. I will try that. Thanks...

The idea to reach out to brokers in yatchworld paid off. Thanks for the suggestion windward 54 !!! I had 2 out of 3 replies within less than 3 hours. One of them told me exactly where it was designed to go by Jeanneau.
For anyone interested ....Basically the upper panel between the port and starbord lockers removes with 6 screws, after the transom door is taken off. about 20" beaneath that (where you would store a liferaft) is a floor that's designed to be cut out and replaced with a custom removable watertight hatch. The generator goes beneath that in a wide open empty area. It will take a little labor, but it's the right job, and makes it serviceable if you can fit yourself down there.

Need to make sure you don’t put on any weight and take our wallet out of your back pocket. I was in the lazzaret yesterday. Tight fit but doable. Ian
